Yoshi's Island (SNES) Fried?!

Recommended Posts

So I had amassed a ridicolous amount of extra lives in Yoshi's Island and I was halfway through the final world, but had to stop playing for the day (this was Sunday), so rather than lose so many extra lives, I left the game on with the thought to come back the next day (Monday) and resume. Life got busy as it is wont to do and I did not get back to the game until last night (Wednesday). When I turned the TV back on the game was playing, but the screen was showing some graphic glitches around the edges. I thought I would just play anyway to see if it would work out. I selected the next level and the screen went black. For a long time. I decided that the glitches had pretty much crashed the game and that those preserved lives were lost to me after all. So I turned of the SNES and then turned it back on, hoping to resume my game anyway, sans lives.

But the game would not boot.

When it would boot, I would get to the title loading screen when it displays the Nintendo logo and makes the coin sound, but the screen would not load properly and the logo would just be a series of vertical lines or color blocks. The coins sound would still play.

This behavior is consistent with a game that is a bit dirty, so I cleaned it. No luck. I cleaned it again. No luck.

I tried other games in the console to see if the console had problems. It did not.

But no matter what I try, Yoshi's Island will not load up for anything. It gets to the loading screen, displays the garbled graphics and then the screen goes black.

Did I destroy my game by leaving it on 3 days? I've never had that happen with a cartridge based game (and I left Adventure Island on for two weeks!)

What did I do?

Yoshi's Island uses a Super FX chip for some of the graphics (it might be using a FX2 chip actually). I think that chip can run hot, so maybe it fried itself after being left on for several days?

I have a cart that does the exact same thing so if you find the fix let me know :) I got it in a game lot awhile ago. All I get is the coin sound w/ minimal gargles video of the Nintendo logo if that.

edit: any cheap carts use that chip I could rob and swap?

Its probably the Super FX chip, the pause screen has rotating polygons that say "PAUSE" so that probably kept it under load the whole time you left it on.
