Side Scrolling Strafe Firing Feedback

Recommended Posts

So, I was considering making a side scrolling shooter where you can move independently of which direction you are shooting.

It seems to me that by holding down the fire button you could auto fire in the direction you are currently facing. As long as you hold down the fire button no matter where you move you will keeping shooting in that direction.

Is that a good plan? Would it eventually tire out your shooting finger?

I would love to see a new side-scrolling shooter for the VCS. There aren't nearly enough of them, in my opinion.

I just played Vanguard yesterday, and actually it works the opposite way. With the button depressed, the ship does NOT fire, but moves faster. With the button released, the ship fires into the direction it's facing AND in the direction it's moving, but moves slower than with the button depressed.

If I'm not mistaken, you can change the difficulty switches and make it so your ship only fires when the button is pressed.

However, what the OP is talking about sounds a little different. If I understand him correctly, in his game you would be constantly firing in one direction when the button is pressed, whereas in Vanguard you will fire up, down, left, right when you push the joystick in those directions.

I think it could possibly work well. If I recall correctly, I may have played a Genesis game or two that worked that way.

Yep, you can change it up with the switches. Which is why it's always a good idea to RTFM

I think I'll keep the FIRE button auto-firing in the direction the player started shooting at. I should SERIOUSLY look into Sega Genesis gamepad detection so I can have proper Section Z controls.
