HSC10 Round 4: Caverns of Mars

Recommended Posts

Almost the same game, a little different with laser gates to get by and the passages are narrower.

It is a little easier as well, I think they improved several features, it should be more correct to maintain this title as COM2

Thanks guys, might give it a bash :)

TBH I don't think I'll be posting any more scores on this one. It's not a particularly good game and it's riddled with bugs that make things a bit of a lottery.

It's that 2nd stage that is the pain, the only tip I have is to just try and survive it taking a few fuels and avoid the explosions and top of the screen; the game is more fun to play on commander where you have all the stages. COM2 is bug free (so far!) :)

Finding Pilot toughest to make progess on but improved to 95,150. Escaped twice on Commander: 106,940 :)

my scores

Novice 120,000 [101,730] completed

Pilot 95,150

Warrior 100,190

Commander 106,940

Total 422,280

I've added a Pre-Poll Poll for round 5 folks ;-)

only in the 2nd stage where destroyed fuel ships sometimes re-appear (at the top of the screen) or your bullets don't destroy one of the baddies when they should . :)

right, always I though that as a feature more than a bug... this is the classical controversy about bugs vs features.

In Mortal Kombat in newer games also has that discussion.

Just for giggles, I had a crack at Caverns and Caverns II on my PAL machine tonight. Helped quite a bit with C.O.M.

Novice (completed): 89710

Pilot (partial): 29140 Total: 118850

And it helped a bit with C.O.M. II - didn't seem any slower, I might have just played better. 20250.

One off-topic comment - playing both machines back to back, I'm stunned how much better the video is on an 800 than my modded 1200xl. I hereby take back anything I may have said to the contrary on the other forum, and I'll probably be moving the PAL chip to my 800!

Yep. They're the ones. It's the fuel 'tankers' that are the biggest problem. Just shows that QA wasn't great for APX.

Think I'll post a combined score just for ha-has.

COM II isn't bad. Always wondered why there wasn't a Scramble clone beyond Beta Lyrae. Collision detection is better in COM II than it ever was in Beta Lyrae, though. ;)

I wonder if there is actually a reliable way to pass through blob phase in Warrior level? I tried more than couple of times and found no safe way or hint, which really worked.

1. Keeping the ship in the middle, then on the left, then on the right etc? No way, blobs do not appear always in the same place.

2. To stop holding the fire permanently and try to shot each blob? No way, if you want to use your fingers in other days.

3. Moving the ship to the bottom of the screen to shot blobs from shortest possible distance, then move up and again quickly down trying to avoid the rest of blobs? Did not really work eather...

:?

My current scores:

Novice: 89340 - fixed to: 120000 completed

Pilot: 154470 - fixed to: 170000 completed

Warrior: 82920 136990 (almost managed 3rd escape)

Commander: 63520

= 436440 490510 :)

...

It's best to get low early holding fire down until you see them, then pick them off using manual fire; they move at a regular interval so when you start to run out of screen just dive past any you haven't destroyed. The game lures you into getting all the fuels but this is a trap as you have less time to shoot them so just collect 1 or 2 of the fuels ;)

I think thats a good strategy... in the manual mentions almost the same one.

the best is to shoot them.

Saturday afternoon is a wonderful time to waste a few hours shooting things! Finally got the hang of those stupid laser gates that appear beginning in Pilot level, and I took a crack at the Warrior and Commander difficulty as well. I'm really getting into this game - it's one of those where you can just kind of wire yourself in and go on autopilot when you're doing well.

My new scores:

Novice 120000 (completed w/89710)

Pilot 87940 (2 escapes)

Warrior 55400

Commander 44910

total 308250

Also improved my COM2 score to 52550!
