+Gemintronic #1 Posted March 25, 2013 Check out this Slashdot post: http://games.slashdot.org/story/13/03/23/1529209/meet-the-gamers-keeping-retro-consoles-alive Apparently there wasn't a generation before SNES that was worthy of comment. What's retro about a Dreamcast? It was competing with the PS2!
Pixelboy #2 Posted March 25, 2013 It's just an indication that we, AtariAgers, aren't getting any younger.
Algus #3 Posted March 25, 2013 Well it was an odd post and so was the link in the post. I'm not altogether sure the writers know to much about their subject. I wonder how many retro gaming sites they visited before they got to work on their story about those funny people who play old fashioned games.
S1500 #4 Posted March 25, 2013 Slashdot is no longer relevant as it was 12 years ago. I wouldn't believe any story that is on there .

+Gemintronic #6 Posted March 25, 2013 Slashdot is no longer relevant as it was 12 years ago. I wouldn't believe any story that is on there . I'm starting to realize that. I think it may be some sort of insular cult. As an outsider you can COUNT on your comments going straight to the bottom and never showing up. I put a comment (actually double posted by accident) in the original story with links to AtariAge. I figure they might get a clue if just ONE person gave 6 examples of Atari 2600 games homebrewed it might be an indication they missed something.. Not retro enough. I alone have made over 6 Atari 2600 games.http://www.atariage....6-mmsbc-2-done/ http://www.atariage....incinnati-done/ http://www.atariage....n-sleepystreet/ http://www.atariage....for-atari-2600/ http://www.atariage....ber-willy-done/ http://www.atariage....ci-sisters-wip/
Reaperman #7 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) Retron3 owners will also be happy to note that slashdot upgraded their console to handle 5 systems. Update: 03/23 18:28 GMT by T : If you want to play original classic games on new hardware, instead of the other way around, check out Hyperkin's RetroN 3, which can play cartridges from 5 classic consoles. S1500 #8 Posted March 25, 2013 In addition to that, their website is a mess. I used to frequent that site in the late 90s. There were numerous news stories & the share of anti-MS controversy there. Then the # of stories per day decreased. Then I started to lose interest in it. The comment system is HORRIBLY outdated compared to reddit. Also the same reason why I stopped going to fark.com. Also with fark, people love to post not-work-safe images there. These are sites that time has forgotten largely.
Albert #9 Posted March 25, 2013 The comment system is HORRIBLY outdated compared to reddit. Also the same reason why I stopped going to fark.com. Also with fark, people love to post not-work-safe images there. These are sites that time has forgotten largely. In the last few years they've made various changes to the site, but most of these have been visual. The comment system is terrible now, there are almost always troll posts sitting at the top of stories, and people can only "moderate" posts at random times (I happen to have 15 moderation points today, so I "upvoted" Loon's post with the AtariAge links. Certainly doesn't get the traffic it used to. I've never had a problem with NSFW links on Fark, at least stuff that makes the front page of the site (which is the only page I look at--I don't even have an account on that site). Reddit is much worse in this regard, as you'll often run into NFSW images (many times in comments, but sometimes even on the main page) that aren't tagged as such. ..Al
Hatta #10 Posted March 25, 2013 I like slashdot because the people there have thick skins and can handle strong arguments being used without taking them personally, and often respond with arguments that are just as strong as mine. Yes, the code sucks to high hell, and I can't use the site without the "classic discussion system" *and* noscript. And yes, the quality of the "news" has gotten a lot worse since Taco left. I'd stop visiting if I knew where else I could have contentious debates without offending people.

The video maker can outright delete your comment. If THAT doesn't happen fanbois can hit the spam button until your comment is buried. I've had BOTH happen. Not just from juvenile trolls but corporate sponsored channels (where you'd expect customer feedback to be valued/respected).

+Gemintronic #17 Posted March 25, 2013 I didn't know anyone paid attention to Slashdot anymore. Next can we have a link to something on Digg or MySpace? I do agree it's crusty but the Slashdot effect still brings websites to a crawl. Must be relevant to someone which is why I found that piece so annoying.

S1500 #19 Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) I haven't been to Digg in ages. Must take a look. ..Al I stopped visiting then they switched to the new layout. Me and apparently a million other users migrated from digg to reddit. Yeah, Slashdot, still known to me as the pro-Linux anti-MS propaganda site. No, THIS year will be the year of Linux on the desktop! Open source software rules! EDIT: Oh dear Digg has turned into Windows 8's tiles. And I can't make comments on there either. They gave up. +Gemintronic #21 Posted March 26, 2013 Despite Albert using up points my post is dead last. Also, the original story doesn't even bother to check its comments. My double posts is still there Maybe I shouldn't have been so concerned. Both sites look like they can be safely dismissed!
MrMaddog #22 Posted March 27, 2013 Well that makes me laugh... The same children of the 90's that talk trash about us "old folgies" still playing and making games on the Atari are now doing the same thing on the 16-bit systems they loved as kids once they're in college. Not to mention that Ars Technica has the same geek/politcal headlines that Slashdot regurtates, still has the same type of trolls but the moderation system is way better.
