nanochess #1 Posted April 4, 2013 Hi everybody. So far I've almost one hundred of loose Colecovision cartridges and some CIB. I've learnt that Atarisoft/Spinnaker/Sega labels use a kind of "acid" glue that "eats" the label through the years leaving "dark" looking spots, this even happens with some Coleco/Parker Brother cartridges under certain humidity conditions. So far looks like the only solution is to keep cartridges along small silica gel bags to stop the process. So my question is what kind of glue is being used in homebrew labels? is it safe for, let us say, 20 years? I'm thinking in Collectorvision, Team Pixelboy and everyone else that has published homebrews. Of course all my carts are away from sun, inside plastic boxes and with generous quantities of silica gel small bags.
retroillucid #2 Posted April 4, 2013 Our labels are printed on quality vinyl .... Since the last past ...let's say 10 releases I'm sure they will last long and will not suffer from "plaque attack"
Pixelboy #3 Posted April 4, 2013 I don't know what glue is used in my label stickers. I just place an order at a local print shop, and they print labels in groups of six on 8x11 glossy blank sticker sheets. Later, I use an X-Acto knife to cut out the labels from these sheets.
nanochess #4 Posted April 4, 2013 I suppose that I'm safe using the silica gel. Thanks for the answers.
+pboland #5 Posted April 4, 2013 The only thing I know about the adhesive I use on my label stock is its labeled as acrylic adhesive. Outside of that, I'm not sure the exact chemical composition. I know I have a few labels that are about 10 years old and I don't see any issues with spotting. Don't know if that helps.
ColecoDan #6 Posted April 4, 2013 what glue would you use on old colecovision labels to reapply them. The only problems I have had is with stupid parker bros. But I left the label off because I didn't want to ruin it with the wrong glue.

nanochess #8 Posted April 4, 2013 (edited) This is what I've read about plaque on Atari cartridges: http://atariage.com/...sfully-removed/ including what a press operator says It also links to some ideas to clean labels using some chemicals before them are further deteriorated. And I found this that supports the retroillucid's idea of using Elmer's glue (I don't think it exists in Mexico, but we have Pritt stick) http://atariage.com/...rtridge-labels/ Also recommends NOT to use Superglue because the "Atarisoft"-like effect. By the way, so far I've validated the idea of using a Hair-Dryer to remove a label (a Gorf cartridge,) but I did it a little fast and it leaved a spot of paper Edited April 4, 2013 by nanochess
