Can Pitfall II be hacked to have extra levels like 5200 version?

Recommended Posts

5200 and Atari 8-bit version has extra level that can be reached when you finish the mail part. There are many details about the extra caves so would it be possible to build something like Pitfall 2 part 2 ROM based on the extra level? Only the original graphic and basic code would need to be transferred, the layout would need to be changed, new monsters, and clue information would need to be added.

Can it be done? I don't know enough about 2600 code to do this since it'd be more complicated than a straight level layout hack.

I'm sure it could be done. But how. A lot of people say that the sound chip in the game would make it hard, but I personally don't see a reason you couldn't make a piggy back cart that could leach the pitfall carts sound chip (kind of like knuckles for genesis, is what i'm thinking about)

Of course, some willing home brewer could probably make the extra caves as a standalone cart, ax the sound, or put different sound in (personally, the music was what made pitfall 2 for me, but apparently a lot of people think it's not needed)

Anyhow, possible? sure, likely? not really.

It's not as easy as just altering the layout. There are extra items like rope, bat that flies differently, and ant that didn't exists in first part. It'd be more than a straight hack.

If the first cave was possible, then so is the 2nd. I agree that a hack wouldn't do it, though...it would need to be done from scratch.

Harmony cart does great emulation of the DPC chip... with added features (DPC+). What about the melody boards?

I like the idea of an add on cart. Kernal runs from the addon and bankswitches to the original. Perhaps other games could do this using a pluged in pitfall 2 cart just for its DPC chip.
