ColecoDan #4 Posted April 19, 2013 My advice: Don't mess around with those power supply Get yourself a Canadian power supply. I love how you say just go get a canadian power supply. Like they can be picked up at the local candy store or something. Those things are harder to come by than getting the hard to come by games.

retroillucid #6 Posted April 19, 2013 Not when you ask the right guy. . Couples years back, I started buying every Canadian unit I could find.,.. I mean EVERY Refurbished them and give some to my friends and I also sold a few At some point, I had like 30 consoles on shelves, mostly all Canadian unit When I started CollectorVison, I bough MANY lot of Colecovision wich included looses carts I used those loose carts for the first homebrews I published Funny part is, when I started testing the units ( US and Canadian) I noticed that almost every US model had problems/symptoms So, like everyone would do, I crack open EVERY units I had, I noticed that either US and Canadian use the very same PCB, some with different revisions Early revisions tends to have ALOT of ICs problems.... Ask me why? I dunno I had few problems with the later revisions btw BUT, one main thing I notice, Canadian units seems to all works like a charm! Ok, I came across VERY FEW units that had problem, but strangely? Yep, early revision model! Anyway, I think the Canadian power supply seems to be alot more reliable But, everybody who know me enough, know how much I praise the Canadian Power Supply Love your CV? Get yourself a CDN power supply! Check Canadian auctions on ebay, they pop up sometimes!

Manoau2002 #12 Posted April 20, 2013 Does anyone have pictures of canadian and american power supplies? Pretty sure mines Canadian since I bought it locally. I just want to know for future reference.
Pixelboy #13 Posted April 20, 2013 Does anyone have pictures of canadian and american power supplies? Pretty sure mines Canadian since I bought it locally. I just want to know for future reference. If the power block has prongs that plug directly into a power socket, it's an american power supply. If the power brick has two wires coming out of it (one that goes to the wall socket and the other to the ColecoVision console) then you have a canadian power supply.

Rik #16 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) I found an American CV power supply, the one that plugs directly into the wall. It makes a pretty loud buzzing noise. IIRC, it did work. Should one use a CV power supply that is noisy? CV's aren't exactly that easy to find. I'd hate to fry any of my CV'S with the thing, so i played it safe and stopped using it. I have found about 5 CV power supplies in the past 5 years or so of collecting, and only 3 of them have worked. It's a shame to toss any CV power supply, especially if you are not sure like I am. Rik #18 Posted August 5, 2013 (edited) It would be neat to be able to get a custom CV power supply made. I'm not sure where one would go to for this. Or have an old one rebuilt. I figure it wouldn't be too hard, lots of original parts could be used like the power plug which is unique to the CV. I'm going to find out about this from various Electronic tech shops around here. I'm no Electronics adept, don't know much about it, so that would be something i'll check with. These O.E. CV power bricks are so flaky, never know when they'll burn out.If this doesn't work out, i can always turn to Yurkie!!! NIAD #19 Posted August 5, 2013 How about an Arcade Switching Power Supply and then reuse the cable from a U.S. Power Supply. It should be a simple job especially with screw terminal hookups and crimping connectors on the ends of the wires from the Coleco cord instead of having to solder the wires directly to the P.S. hardhat #20 Posted August 8, 2013 Once upon a time, I heard someone say what component in the US power supply is the most likely to fail, and then it becomes a matter of replacing it. The buzzing usually represents a capacitor that is leaking in my experience. I don't do power supply tinkering though, since those high voltages are dangerous and I'm just not careful enough. You can of course convert a PC power supply to work with the ColecoVision since the voltages are there at the required amperages, but you'd need to steal the cable with that special connector from an existing power supply. I've done the PC power supply for the Coleco Adam conversion two or three times. The Adam has that DB9 connector that is much easier to find. But I've even powered a ColecoVision using that dongle that came with the roller controller. So I suppose that could be an option.
+boxpressed #21 Posted August 8, 2013 I've been chatting with the person making those A8 PS and selling them on eBay. I planned to send him a couple of busted CV PS so that he could use the connector. But parts and labor would have cost $60, making the project cost prohibitive. I think the TI 99/4A PS uses the same connector, but the PS is very different and could damage your CV. Perhaps only the connector could be used. ten-four #22 Posted August 8, 2013 I've put 5 ColecoVision power supplies behind me. They are all dead. The first one Works in 15 years. I used in September 2010 a PC power supply which I modified to operate on the ColecoVision. It has so far worked for 3 years. Pictures shows PC Power for my ColecoVision in 2010 and now for my new "ColecoVision Arcade".

nanochess #24 Posted August 8, 2013 (edited) I've found this relatively small power supply: http://www.digikey.c...-1072-ND/266062 It would be a matter of adding a box, a cable for AC and another for DC, I remember seeing the connector. But oops! it's the reverse http://coleco.freese...s.com/hobby.htm Edited August 8, 2013 by nanochess
Necron99 #25 Posted September 30, 2013 anybody have a extra Canadian power supply for sale still? I recently picked up another Colecovision and the power supply it came with has issues...mostly due to the wires being damaged/cut. I can probably fix it but I'd rather just get a working one. The unit works as I've tested it with my other power supply.
