Scene Demos 6-in-1

Hi there!

Back at the Revision 3.0 party, I was a bit envious about a C64 demo running in the row before me. It ran in a loop and was looking ok. That was something that I wanted to have for my VCS. But most of the scene demos for the 2600 are rather short, running 1:30 to 3:30. But they where also short in size, most of them are 4k or 8k. So I had the idea of linking several demos in one 32k ROM.

I needed to slightly modify them so that each demo hands over control to the next one and sometimes move them to another bank. The demos contained in this ROM are (as in order of the ROM, first demo is not determined, as the starting bank is undefined by the bankswitching sceme):

1) Tom/Jones by Trilobit (2007): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=31535

2) Stella Lives! by Tjoppen (2012): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=59121

3) Sphaera Stellarium by Noice (2011): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=58034

4) Drip.bin by Ed Fries (2012): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=60846

5) Minute And A Bit by Tjoppen (2011): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=58038

6) ISO by Jac! (2011): http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=58044

No interaction, no menu, just 12 minutes of eye candy per loop. This release is PAL only, as all the demo parts are PAL only (except for Drip.bin which has been ported to PAL by me).

I've also the permission of all contributors to release this data as a module on the AtariAge store. So, I'm announcing a cover contest. The winner will get his design on the cartridge as well as his own cartridge.

Edit: the winner will be picked by the guys involved with this cartridge.

Have fun,

SvOlli

Waaaah, PAL.

*heart sinks to the floor*

I guess I'll have to man-up and get a old Color set with V-hold controls, given the binary works on an NTSC Atari .Most do, Trilobit's doctor is the only PAL demo that won't work on NTSC that I've seen.

Looking forward to seeing entries!

Most current TVs can do both, so buy a 2600 jr which can be easily modded to composite output: http://www.console-c...e/videomod.html

It's in German, but the mod is pretty straight forward, so you can go just with the images.

I've got an NTSC 2600 here as well.

Oh, my new LCD TV can handle it, but it hates interlaced signals on the RF. I'll probably need to mod my atari soon to get rid of that.. if I can at all.

Since there have been no submissions for a label yet, I took the 2600 label maker, gimp and came up with this:

post-31204-0-35024200-1367361775_thumb.jpg

post-31204-0-73283900-1367361784_thumb.jpg

So at least we have a fallback if there is no entry.

P.S.: Did I mention that the Revision 3.0 party was taking place on the easter weekend, and that I had the idea on the easter sunday? No? Well, I did now. icon_wink.gif

any chance of a pal/ntsc switch in cart (like using a difficulty switch or something to control it?)

Without looking at the difficulty on stuff like timing, etc, most of the ROMs are so fully packed, that there's simply no space left for a feature like this. In Tom/Jones it took me more than an hour just to squeeze the 9 bytes out needed for the bankswitch. You need to duplicate the space for colors and timing. I did this once for a yet unreleased interactive demo. It's only doable, if you take this into design concideration from the beginning.

Best chance to get NTSC running would be a separate rom. If anyone wants to do this, I'm happy to assist. But as I'm convinced that 60Hz is better for gaming, I also think that 50Hz is better for demos, because you've got more "screen to fill". I might trade that off, living in an "NTSC-country", but me moving is probably not going to happen. icon_winking.gif

I also think you're underestimating the amount of work needed to port the demos to NTSC. Don't burn yourself out, man.

I only know about the conversion stuff on my code. Drip.bin was ported from NTSC to PAL, but it was a lucky shot. The port back there would be easy, but I definitely wouldn't touch the other demos. The head is too full with other ideas... So no need to worry about my mental health.

Holy Moly! As a n00b who can just about make a sprite move around the darned screen, these are mindblowing.

Also, your link "A Demo Coders Guide" doesn't work. Not that I am looking to write a demo lol, but thought it would be interesting top watch.

And these are just a selection, there are a whole lot more on http://pouet.net/ . You can select releases by the platform, it's called "Atari VCS" there.

Link is fixed. It was an older version, that was withdrawn.

This is awesome SvOlli! I downloaded it a month ago but just unzipped it today :)

All fantastic demo's and smooth transitions!

My favourite was the hi-res spinning globe; wish I could view this compilation on my VCS instead of in Stella - someone should share a youtube video for NTSC land :)

Just follow the pouet link, there are video/youtube/capped.tv links for them already.

Nope, only binary download and mirrors are available. The videos are only available for each separate part, which is tediou to view.

While should have a framegrabber lying around here, I only have vlc as capture software and no YouTube account. So I only can provide some raw footage for someone else to finish and put online. If anyone is interested in finishing it, please leave a note here, and I'll do the video rip this weekend.

I use RF channel 2 on my Atari. My LCD TV can tolerate NTSC50, but it chops the bottom of the screen off. Honestly, I think most LCD screens are completely roll proof. Also be advised if you are running PAL ROMs on an NTSC Atari of visa-versa, your color hues will be completely FUBAR'd. Looks like I'm stuck with Stella then... :P

And yeah, I hate how I get horizontal bars whenever I encounter sprite flicker. Some NES games do this too to emulate transparency, like when Mario takes damage. All 8- and 16-bit retro consoles that I know of run at 240p (262+262 scanlines), not 480i (262+263 scanlines), but all modern TVs process them as 480i.

Man, just watched the demo in Stella. Awesome!

Very cool SvOlli! I would be glad to upload it to youtube as the long play compilation is awesome and I asked for/suggested it :)
