Bought it at a garage-sale for 35 €. The PAL-system is working, but the green power LED is dead. How to change the LED?

Now I need the silver NTSC Prosytem label - don't like the european version...

Congrats, Mister VCS! I, too, recently brought a 7800 back into the fold after about as long a time. ($40 on Craigslist with a bunch of games, the joysticks and a trackball.) My 6-year-old daughter loves the old thing, and even my 2-year-old wants in on the act. Had to pick up a CX78 for the elder daughter because she hates--hates--the ProLines. Thank goodness for Best, eh?

The power LED issue could be the LED itself, or the leads soldered to the board, or the solder bridged (shorted) or the shield shorting the leads (not likely), or the current limiting in-series resistor open or bad solder, or the drive circuit is fowled up. Too technical? sorry. Nevertheless, you have to open the unit (6 screws or something like that), and fortunately you don't have to take the shield off to look at the underside of the board where the LED mounts. Looking at a NTSC machine, the power LED is CR2 and the LED body usually has a flat edge which signifies ground, which as you face the front of the unit is to the right. You MUST install it the right way as this part is polarized. If you need to replace the LED, this LED is like the giraffe of LEDs, long legs. Radio Schlock probably doesn't have it. It will probably be a special order. I recommend the BLUE color (as in my name) but it draws more current and you may need to boost the series current-limiting resistance value. Or you may have to buy a normal LED and lap-solder longer legs onto it. Good luck.

Meanwhile we will be efforting a re-design of Galaga, aka Galaga-FF, soon, which would include the PAL version. It may be a few months before you see it, but you'll see it. The last issue we're interested in incorporating is fast fire (FF). It has to do with the missile timing MISTIMER routine, which is complex to the point I don't know how it works yet. I know someone on here who could fix it in a heartbeat, but he's busy right now.

 

I have some NTSC nameplates somewhere in inventory, but they're not for sale. Maybe someone else on here will part with one.

update: Now i am a proud owner of a PAL 7800 with a NTSC nameplate! I bought a NTSC 7800 and took my PAL 7800 motherboard into the NTSC case. The nameplate

is very scratched -but it says PROSYSTEM yea! Pictures coming soon. Is it possible to remove some of the scratches? And I switched the white "LED holder" from the NTSC motherboard to my PAL-motherboard and took the green PAL-power LED (the red NTSC LED broke by this action) - and now the LED works!!

I would imagine the name plate was changed because the US one was more expensive due to the machining of the raised fonts and rainbow outline. The PAL 7800 bezel screams "cheapass".
