cimerians #1 Posted April 29, 2013 Curious to know what games you bought back in the day were a disappointment when you brought it home to play. I remember the following being let downs: Illusions (I just couldnt stand it) Super Action Baseball (ok but not what I expected with those controllers plus I couldnt play it on my own) Space Panic (not bad but could have been better) Grogs Revenge (I expected something more like the first game) Popeye (fun but I thought the graphics were lousy) Not bad games but I was expecting these games to be better than what I really got. Pixelboy #3 Posted April 29, 2013 - Blockade Runner : From graphics to controls to gameplay mechanics, there's very little that doesn't suck about that game. - Chuck Norris Superkicks : It's like the designers didn't even try to do a good game. The music belongs in a Smurf game, not a beat-em-up. - Evolution : It's just one of those games that sounds like it has great potential, but impossible to implement adequately in just 32K of ROM and 1K of RAM. However, I think I could do a much better game design-wise with the concept, and I'd definately try if I had the time. - Frogger II: ThreeeDeep! : It doesn't even come close to the fun of the first game. Simply atrocious. That's another one I would redo (as a homebrew version) just to show the original programmer(s) how you make a great sequel to a great game. - Illusions : Even when you figure out what the heck you're supposed to do in this game, it doesn't get any more fun. Catchy music though... - It's Only Rock 'N Roll : Yawn. 'Nuff said. - James Bond: 007 : There's not a shred of doubt in my mind that the guys who created this game were on drugs. - Quest for Quintana Roo : Easely the game in this list that I was the most disappointed with. The graphics suck so much they ruin the entire game. It would have been a million times better as an isometric game. - Sammy Lightfoot : Crummy platform physics and animation ruin this game beyond salvation. - Super Action Baseball : No single-player mode (aside from practice stuff) is a big no-no in my book. - Super Sketch : This should have been an ADAM application, not a simple CV game where you can't save your work. - Tomarc the Barbarian : It's obvious this game's programmer didn't know the first thing about making a good platformer. It could have been a good game... Just one more to my list of games I would redo just for the heck of it.
ColecoDan #4 Posted April 29, 2013 PitStop - After the original excitement of trying to do a pitstop and pull the tires off as fast as possible it got boring pretty fast. Sammy Lightfoot - I remember loving it on a computer which was where I played it first but then years later when played on Colecovision I was like it plays the same as if I was using the keyboard on a computer which was dissapointing. DragonFire - I know a lot of people like this game but I remember playing it on Intellivision and thinking that is it, I am going to do these 2 screens the whole time and when I got the colecovision I felt the same. Venture - I love venture and it was the reason I wanted the colecovision to begin with when I played at friends house, however I was so disgusted when I finally finished the treasures and all it did was play the same level over and over again. It's only rock n roll - Are you kidding me, I am playing a colecovision right not a stupid computer word game. Motorcross racer - Who the heck made driving up a mountain feel like I am steering with my mind trying to use the force. Grogs Revenge - I think the same guy that created the steering on motorcross was hired to do this game, I am just trying to pick up clams on a road and this thing is otta control. I don't think Grog has ever killed me in that game it was either falling off a cliff or ramming my head into the mountain as the only ways I died. jetset #5 Posted April 29, 2013 Zaxxon. I didn't own a CV, but my cousin did. I was SOOOOO excited when they got Zaxxon, I remember riding my bike all the way there because my mother wouldn't drive me. It was one of my faves in the arcade, so I was pumped to see how awesome it was gonna look and play. Then...Ugh!!! I didn't know what collision detection was, and I didn't understand the difficulty of smooth scrolling. I just knew it popped and farted along like the plane had water in the gas tank, and I'd get killed by stuff I didn't even touch! The sounds were horrible...like a bad penny arcade, I was expecting the organ grinder music to start playing. BUT they had plenty of decent games so we survived it. Over time I've grown to appreceate Zaxxon. It's a fun little shooter for all it's faults.
Ikrananka #6 Posted April 29, 2013 - Blockade Runner : From graphics to controls to gameplay mechanics, there's very little that doesn't suck about that game. And yet it is one of the few games I am good at - lol. Doesn't mean I think it's a good game though, I agree with everything you said.
LynxVGL #7 Posted April 29, 2013 Congo Bongo: I wanted this game for soooooo long. Finally scored a loose copy and could not believe how broken the controls are. Sad...
sqoon #8 Posted April 29, 2013 Dukes of Hazzard - Game is too plain on the graphics side. Illusions - What exactly am I supposed to be doing in this game?
Manoau2002 #9 Posted April 30, 2013 There are a few different games I don't like. I would have to say that the game I was the most disappointed with is Frogger 2 Threedeep. I love the original Frogger. (I own a Frogger T-Shirt that I wear at least once a week) Frogger 2 Threedeep is a horrible game. Unless your a completionist (like me) I would save your money or buy something else.
NIAD #10 Posted April 30, 2013 The games that I was more disappointed in were: - Alphabet Zoo - Dance Fantasy - Linking Logic - Logic Levels - Learning with Leeper - Telly Turtle - Amazing Bumpman - Fraction Fever - Facemaker - C.P.K. Picture Show - Smurf Paint 'n Play Workshop - Memory Manor - Dr. Seuss' Fix Up - WizMath - Brain Strainers I actually liked Monkey Academy! It was the CV version of Mario Bros. until CollectorVision released a real version of MB. Plus Monkey Academy is a Konami game and it's hard to find fault with any of their games that made it over to the CV... both BITD and currently. cimerians #11 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) lol....funny stuff. I still don't know how to play Illusions by the way. Also, I remember buying a spectra video game that was horrid. I think you were this weird stickman on the bottom of a wall and shot water at cats or fireballs or something. I cant remember the name of it at the moment but were there any spectravideo games that were good? Edited April 30, 2013 by cimerians
fiddlepaddle #12 Posted April 30, 2013 Cosmic Avenger. I always wanted to play Scramble at home, and thought CA would do it for me. It (sort-of) is the same basic gameplay, but the jerky video and not-smooth control destroys it.

(except its a spider or bug instead of a stickman) I actually like that game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_Yum6Uli7U Edited April 30, 2013 by Manoau2002
Manoau2002 #14 Posted April 30, 2013 I could see Wiz Math being a huge disappointment after spending 75.00 loose or 500.00 or so CIB. (At least those are the prices I have come across lately)
jblenkle #15 Posted April 30, 2013 I always loved Illusions...although it's been awhile since I've played it so I'm going by memory...basically you have to combine all the globs into one...this is accomplished by running them into each other. You have to be creative to do this, like dropping one down on top of another as it passes below. After you combine them all if I recall correctly you can then go through a mirror to the 2nd screen. But I think if you wait too long, they start breaking apart again. I don't remember exactly what you do on the 2nd screen, but it involves a cube and when you finish it, you go back to the 1st screen and start over again at a harder level. This game can be frustrating, but it's fun once you get the hang of it. Games I was disappointed in? Pitstop Campaign '84 It's Only Rock 'N Roll Dance Fantasy Jukebox Linking Logic Logic Levels Word Feud Telly Turtle In a word, "Boring!!!!" lol....funny stuff. cimerians #16 Posted April 30, 2013 (edited) Thanks for info on Illusions and Frantic Freddy. Now I need to try those again...but on an emulator, never kept my originals of those two games I didnt like them at the time. Is a multicart considered emulation? It is only emulation if you are not playing on the authentic hardware of the system. I.E. you are using software to play it on a computer.

That's funny because i had never realized that scrollings was jerky until i re-played them recently.

Vic George 2K3 #25 Posted April 30, 2013 Of the games I owned: Miner 2049er was the game that disappointed me, particularly because it hardly resembled the Atari 800/5200 version that I wanted to play so much (and only got to play in recent years through an emulator). Different screens and a rather difficult playing curve was what ruined it for me.
