I scored a puppy nintendo ds fat at goodwill for 5 bucks. Works great. But the right hinge is broken. Is the cover easy to replace. The hinge is not broken. But the blue cover around the hinge is so its loose. And is ebay the only option for a new cover.

Broken and loose hinge is a very common problem unfortunately, and DS isn't meant to be taken apart. It won't be easy. When you take it apart, you also have to be very careful of the fragile ribbon cable that connects the top LCD to the mainboard.

You could try eBay for a dead DS that has good hinge, take that one apart first so you get an idea how to take apart the working one.

You could also ebay up a replacement housing. Unfortunately, most of what's out there is pretty poor quality. As for taking the thing apart, I've been all up inside my girlfriend's DS Lite (the white one where you can see all the dirt under the clear outer layer, I disassembled the whole thing to clean it properly), so I can't see the fat model being any harder to tinker with.

Only problem with ebay is all the housings are ds lite or xl or 3ds. No fat or original ds housings are available. At least I have not seen any. What a shame. I'll try amazon next.

I have replaced the shell and top screen on a ds lite. Check you tube for dissasembly instructions. Be aware this is not going to be all that easy. It takes delicate fingers patience and precision. Read many reviews before buying your shell. There are many crapy shells out there that even when installed perfectly you would be better off having a cracked hinge.
