Nintendo Penguin #1 Posted February 21, 2003 I think it is easily Pole Position or Pole Position II. What does everyone else think? It can be any racing game on any system, SNES and older.
MegaManFan #2 Posted February 21, 2003 I was rather fond of Test Drive in my youth - yes, the very first edition. Pole Position is good, and there's a classic arcade game that eludes me where your mission was to chase down drug suspects in your car. Every time you slammed into their vehicle you'd hear someone say "OH MAN!" Wish I knew what game that was
NE146 #3 Posted February 21, 2003 for 2600.. I dug Enduro. But for systems after that, I had a MAJOR THING for Super Monaco GP on the Sega Genesis
MegaManFan #4 Posted February 21, 2003 If "racing" doesn't mean cars, I'd also like to add Hang-On and Super Hang-On to my previous list.

Atari Rescue Group #6 Posted February 21, 2003 The best racing game ever was the Atari arcade game that had up to 8 people around it. Wa that called Indy 800? I remember going to Disneyland as a kid and my brother and I would spend lots of time in the arcade near where Space Mountain is playing that game. Of course we played it near home too. Ice Race on the Indy 500 cartridge is a good one. Sliding around the turns is cool.

Cybergoth #9 Posted February 21, 2003 Hi there! I just can't nail it down to one. There were so many I really loved: Buggy Boy, Test Drive 2, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Rc. Pro Am, Pit Stop2, Mario Kart, Stunt Car Racer... Greetings, Manuel

MegaManFan #14 Posted February 21, 2003 How can you forget F-Zero? Mostly because I think it pales in comparison to F-Zero X on the N64, and that's too modern to be considered a "classic" racing game.
AtariLeaf #15 Posted February 21, 2003 Oh this is an easy one. On the 2600 my favorite was always Grand Prix. Besides the NHL series, the only Genesis games I played were Road Rash. I love those games. I still occasionaly play the PC version that came out a few years back. I'm also a big fan of the old PC game, Stunt Driver by the now defunct Spectrum Holobyte, and of course, Need for Speed 3. BTW, anyone know if there will ever be future versions of Road Rash on ANY system, including PC? I'd love to see modern version for the PC (since I don't have an Xbox, PS2, etc). The PS1 versions weren't very good, either was the N64 version.
RMila75 #16 Posted February 21, 2003 I agree that F-Zero X is amazing but the original on SNES still rocks! I forgot to mention that I really like Top Gear 2 on Genesis but the music and sound do not compare to the original Top Gear. I guess we should mention OutRun as well. MegaManFan #17 Posted February 21, 2003 Chase H. Q., I think. That's it! Some day, I need a cab of this in my rec room. "AWW MAN!" I pumped a crazy amount of quarters into that. In fact some days at the pizza parlor, my buddy Chris and I would just stand there for 30 minutes - whenever somebody got tired and ran out of chase time we'd trade places and pump in another quarter to keep it going. "Stop right there!! You're under arrest for drug smuggling." Ahhh, those were the days.

+Cafeman #20 Posted February 21, 2003 On the PSX there is a disc called Konami Classics. It has Road Fighters (I think that's the name), an 80's Konamic racer. I recently fell in love with this great game. I think I talked about this at DP recently. On 2600, there can be only one, and that one is: Enduro. This is still one of the best racing games I've ever played, I continually come back to it. Night Driver w/Paddles is 2nd. I love arcade-perfect Pole Position II as well. Quite challenging, with 4 tracks, you can never get tired of it. Hit the water puddle at a certain velocity and you get a turbo boost -- not everybody knows this! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Outrun and Hang On. I play 'em on Saturn and DC Shenmue disks. And on genesis, I was addicted to the excellent Super Monaco GP (not the 2nd one though, which doens't have the same character/soul).
RMila75 #21 Posted February 21, 2003 Cafeman, how easy is it to get to those games on Shenmue? I might get that game soon and it's a bonus if I can play Outrun whenever I want. Do you need to use up your "credits", or whatever the charcters have to save up in the game?
+Cafeman #22 Posted February 21, 2003 Shenmue has an arcade in the town called Dobuita, which you encounter within the first hour or two of gameplay. Just save off your game as soon as you find the arcade, with Ryo standing in front of it at 10:00 AM when it opens, and you can simply load your game and play some rounds whenever you want. You still have to have money (you will have enough to play MANY MANY games), and have to actually walk up to each machine and select it, but you can put as many 100 Yen coins in as you want to play back-to-back sessions. The games are Hang On and Space Harrier. Additionally Ryo has a Sega Saturn in the TV room. Keep buying little things at the Tomato store, and bringing in the Winner! pop cans -- these allow you a chance to win something. You can win Hang On and Space Harrier games for your Saturn, and hence just go to that room in the house and play 'em all you want. Now, I usually play Outrun on my Saturn but it is also on Shenmue II. I think you have to find each game to be able to play it on the bonus 4th disk (DC version of course), which can be a pain if that's all you are interested in. You see, the Shenmue II world is huge. There is an arcade with one of these games in it ( I can't remember which game off hand) in one of the early quarter sections of the city. The other game is found in its own room later in the game, and I think that Hang On is semi-hidden in the yellow head building (I never found it or looked for it). Once you've unlocked it, IIRC you can play 'em on Disk 4. Wow, I'm realizing I can't remember many specifics about Shen II ... need to play it through one more time. I recommend both games though. raindog #23 Posted February 21, 2003 I played a lot of Spy Hunter, Roadblasters, Super Sprint and PC Road Rash. Not sure which I like best since they're all basically completely different. Oh, I guess I played a lot of Bump'n'Jump too but when Spy Hunter appeared I switched my allegiance.
