xDragonWarrior #1 Posted May 26, 2013 (edited) If the Xbox one doesn't play used games, and internet is required to play on it,All Sega has to do is make sure their console Plays used games,no internet is required to play it,a price cheaper than the PS4,Xbox one and Wiiu, decent graphics(better than the Wiiu) and enough Hardcore games/alot of the same games that the PS4,Xbox one and Wiiu would get to convert people over to be a decent success. What do you think. If there was a console that didn't have the problems that made me not want the Xbox One,and also had the same games and a a cheaper price, and could sell the games you don't want anymore, why would you not get it?. Elerach #2 Posted May 26, 2013 Consoles cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop, and hundreds more to promote and advertise. Sega just does not have the capital required to even scratch the surface in terms of development and production. It has also been more than a decade since the last console, one that left a bad taste in the mouths of a lot of mainstream gamers with its subpar software support and short lifespan (as great as the dreamcast was). Not only that, but both the 360 and PS3 relied very heavily upon its first and second party software support, and it would be nigh impossible to attract any medium or large studios to an untested console in a market where a single failure can cause collapse a developer. So, no. I wouldn't buy it. It just wouldn't work.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #4 Posted May 27, 2013 Nothing that happens to SEGA's rivals is going to change the fact that SEGA are in no position to relaunch a new console in the market place. They lost too much trust with fans. burned too many bridges with developers and simply do not have the finances or backing to try it. No amount of fanboy wishing or dreaming will change this. I am a HUGE SEGA fan but that is the reality of the situation.
Jinks #5 Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) Who is SEGA again?? Same odds of coleco or atari making a console ever again. Its all done get over it!! Edited May 27, 2013 by Jinks
MagitekAngel #6 Posted May 27, 2013 I think the last few months' worth of console announcements have adequately demonstrated that the console biz in general just isn't the attractive, lucrative money-train it used to be.
Jess Ragan #7 Posted May 27, 2013 It's a lovely fantasy, but Sega is finished with the hugely expensive and cutthroat console business. They couldn't support a system for more than two years, anyway.
moycon #8 Posted May 27, 2013 Screw Sega. I heard Mattel was finally going to release the Giga Intellivision.
Reaperman #9 Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) If Sega were going to launch a console, they missed about 100 better opportunities already. Also, IMO they were just a little more evil at the tail end of DC's lifespan than Sony/M$ are being now. 'Used games S.O.L., with no warning on the package, or way to buy a new license for it to get online'--yeah, that was sega with PSO on DC. Hell, 1 license per Dreamcast--it was locked to the system. Hope your DC held out. Not exactly a breath of fresh air in today's world, is it? Edited May 27, 2013 by Reaperman
Austin #10 Posted May 27, 2013 No, SEGA is dead in the hardware realm of things. And if I heard it right, they are still struggling to this day. They wouldn't be able to survive if they decided to release a new console.
DaytonaUSA #11 Posted May 27, 2013 (edited) No. Agreed. They shined in the arcade era. They wouldn't be able to do a console (too expensive) and create modern games that captivate people enough for everyone to switch. Heck, their games can't do that now anymore, and they're multiplat games. Personally, I'm tired of the Dreamcast 2 rumors and wishes. It's over. The DC died early, yes. And it sucked. But we have to move on. If you're a big classic gamer, stay away from the xbox one. Otherwise, you should be fine with a PS4 and Wii U for used games (and games able to play after the system has been turned offline). If you want my opinion, they should focus on bringing more arcade games to home consoles. So many classics still haven't seen a single day on a home console. SW Trilogy Arcade, SCUD racer, Daytona USA 2, Lost World, etc. And where are the sequels to games we care about, like Jet Set Radio? I mean, honestly... I wouldn't want Sega to come back. They can't even use their brains to bring out the games fans of Sega want. Edited May 27, 2013 by DaytonaUSA
Atariboy #12 Posted May 27, 2013 Microsoft spent half a billion dollars with launch marketing for the original Xbox. Fast forward to this generation now and they spent the same just for launch marketing for an accessory with the Kinect. They simply couldn't afford it even if they wanted to or if they deemed it a good idea. They didn't even sell enough Dreamcast consoles over a decade ago to maintain that business which led to their premature withdrawal from the hardware business. And their struggles continue to this day as a 3rd party publisher. It's a financial impossibility. About the only electronics firm with deep enough pockets to seriously consider releasing a full fledged console and going up against these giants is Apple.
Pixelboy #13 Posted May 27, 2013 Sega could just massively support the Ouya with every last one of their franchises, it would somewhat be like releasing their own console but without the dev and manufacturing costs associated with releasing new hardware.
otaku #14 Posted May 28, 2013 that would be far too many consoles on the market and the cost involved makes it impossible. The money would be better spent giving fans the games they want as daytona usa mentioned a jet set sequel would be great (could use wii u and or ps4 controller for some tagging?) anyway and they should spend most of their time and resources on finishing shenmue
JamesD #15 Posted May 28, 2013 (edited) It took Microsoft more than one game console generation to develop their current sales. I don't think SAGA has the money or enough exclusives to do the same thing. Frankly, I think SEGA has more to gain by supporting a console like the OUYA. Focus on more kid friendly titles based on their exclusives and spend less time developing hyper real games that require much bigger budgets. Titles that require less elaborite game engines distributed digitally like with the OUYA are likely to be quite profitable; especially if OUYA can sell enough consoles. FWIW, I'm not a fan of the OUYA but it seems powerful enough for most of SEGA's library. <edit> I notice that many titles they make are already XBOX Live Arcade or Playstation Network only so SEGA is already focusing on digital distrobution.
