BSA Starfire #1 Posted May 29, 2013 Hi folks, I recently bought a Xbox Crystal console from a car boot sale in box with a extra crystal pad, DVD remote and couple of games very cheap(£5). It works fine and is in fantastic cosmetic condition. However it is really loud, I mean jet plane loud, a constant loud humming from the thing regardless of what it is doing. I want to use the system for both a few games and as DVD player(my old PS2 is having trouble reading DVD movies now, although still plays all games fine), but the noise is drowning out the audio form movies etc. Is there any easy way to shut the old beast up? I can't even figure out how to open it up??? This reminds me of my old 360 consoles, howling piles of [email protected]@t. Thankfully I don't have those anymore. Anyhow any advice on quieting it down much appreciated or even how to open it up! Cheers!
Rex Dart #2 Posted May 29, 2013 The Torx screws are hidden under the stickers & rubber feet on the bottom. I think you need T15 to get into the case, and T10 to get at internal components. I might be wrong, might be T10 and T8, look it up. As for making it quieter... look it up. I'm sure it's been done several ways. xbox-scene should have tutorials. Hatta #3 Posted May 29, 2013 Is this an early model? 1.0-1.1? If so, it's probably the GPU fan. This was replaced with a passive heat sink in later models, and you can do the same. I'm 90% sure I used a Zalman northbridge cooler(nb32j?), but I don't know if you can get those anymore. I just attached it with heatsink tape.
BSA Starfire #4 Posted June 11, 2013 Thanks guys. It has quietened down somewhat with some use. I think it had been sat unused for a long time. I need to buy the correct TORX tools before looking any further.
