Thought: Homebrew with Screen Overlay

After thinking about the Magnavox Odyssey, the thought of using a screen overlay with the Atari 2600 sprung about.

Particularly one that would involve Night Driver.

Would it be feasible by any chance for a person/group of homebrewers to program a Night Driver for the 2600 that better resembles the arcade- and instead of drawing the car on screen, an overlay could be used like the Arcade/Odyssey had/would?

Silly yes, but just a thought. . .

Couldn't you do this just by changing the color of the car to black?

Then print out your own car and tape it to the screen.

Though I wouldn't really wanna do that on a good TV

Haha!, I was thinking of something similar, although an actual overlay simply feels more original and authentic. Also it doesn't necessarily have to be Night Driver, I'm sure other games could implement it ;)

You can change the value in Stella of F0D7 from 83 to 00 and that makes the car black. The problem is the car and score and timer use the same color. Maybe someone else can fix that. Or if you don't care and just wanna mess around, save the rom and go nuts.

Scratch that, it causes other weirdness like the houses, trees and other cars not to appear.

Can someone explain this for educational purposes?

The only problem I can think of is, unlike the early 70s, there are a lot more sizes of TVs out there now, not to mention tube TVs vs HDTVs, which might mean that a 2600 homebrew that incorporated overlays would have to be included with several of them. I'd like to play a game that used them, though...

I have a 5" b/w Sony Watchman - can you make an overlay for that? :P
