+grips03 #1 Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) I just bought a Sears Super Video Arcade off eBay and it smells of smoke. I've already wiped it down and going to leave in basement to air out. I just wish eBay sellers would say it comes from a smoking home so I could avoid buying from them. System works and it would be a pain to mail back, it just that I can't really have something so smelly in my living room. I'll most likely let air out and de-assemble and wash in bath tub when I have time. Any other ideas to remove smoke smell? Also what do I leave for feedback? Ignorama #2 Posted June 11, 2013 My ECS came from a smoking person too, I just gave him 4 stars in item description because everything else was fine. Just say something about the smook in the feedback, neutral or negative would be too hard in my opinion. If you wanna sell the system may we can make a deal. I am looking for a cheap working Sears System and I need it to use your controller, so that would match Just send me a PM with your price idea and I consider to take it away from you (also shipping kills me then )
BSA Starfire #3 Posted June 11, 2013 All this stuff is from 70's or 80's. The chance of it being smoke free are pretty tiny.
Ignorama #4 Posted June 11, 2013 (edited) Yeah, but there is a difference between storage in a smoking household or using them as ashtray The box of the console which came along with my ECS took place on my balcony for three days, because it was a member of the ashtray club I had luck that the sun way shining all these days. +grips03 #5 Posted June 11, 2013 Plan is also to move outside in sunlight as well, but its been raining for a week - New England weather
IntellivisionDude #6 Posted June 11, 2013 My friends say store it with a fabric softener and the smoke smell goes away.
JasonlikesINTV #7 Posted June 11, 2013 I recently received a CIB Commando that stunk of smoke (not in description, of course). I wiped the cart with moist cloth and isopropanol and q-tipped the inside with isopropanol. I let the manual air out and stored a dryer sheet inside the box for three weeks. Slowly, but surely the odor is almost gone. Sunlight wil break down the aromatics, though possibly into other aromatics, but will also break down other compounds....like those for color. I wouldn't recommend sunlight.

AtariTexas #10 Posted June 11, 2013 or right at the end when dentists smoked, and used the rubber dam on the patient as an ashtray, and had their assistant suck the ashes out with the suction....
Crazy Climber #11 Posted June 11, 2013 Most smokers have no idea how bad stuff smells from the smoke. I never did when I smoked.
B0B 1ob1aw #12 Posted June 11, 2013 I remember ashtrays at peoples desk when I first started working, times have changed Back in 1993, right before I was hired, they had finally banned smoking in the offices above the factory. About 1/4 of the office folks, including some management who had private offices, moved out to an unused annex so they could still smoke; they were willing to sit in the open, over a giant woodchipper that shook the whole floor, sweating in the Summer and Freezing in the Winter - due to non-existant HVAC. Some people will do anyhting for Nicotine.
Crazy Climber #13 Posted June 11, 2013 Sweedish Snus baby!! No spitting, chock full o vitamins and not one reported case of cancer in over 100 years of use in sweeden due to the government requiring food grade ingredients and processing/fermenting methods! (okay, I was kidding about the vitamins but everything else is true)
JasonlikesINTV #14 Posted June 11, 2013 I work in a chemical company with lots of flammable solvents. Back in the day, they used to make the smokers smoke in the cafeteria.....for safety reasons. This year, they are banning it from the entire campus, even outdoors.....for safety reasons. Glad I don't smoke.
RickR #15 Posted June 11, 2013 Put it in a sealed container with an open box of baking powder for a few days. That should get rid of a lot of the smoke smell.
Eric7100 #16 Posted June 11, 2013 Why would anybody choose to smoke anyway? Not only is it gross and disgusting, it is nothing more than a slow form of suicide. It shows that you have no respect for your own body or life (not to mention others around you).

sqoon #19 Posted June 12, 2013 See if a rental company around your area has an ozone machine available. My brother has one and all you do is run it in a closed room for a day or two and all odors are gone. An apartment complex near me uses one to treat apartments after smokers move out. OutlawTorn71 #20 Posted June 12, 2013 The cigarette smoke can actually leave a nasty residue (most likely has if it's real stinky) - I have had excellent luck by opening the case up and giving it a thorough wipe down with lint free towels and Armour All Interior - It is designed for all kinds of plastics, and it's not greasy - I spent too many years working in car dealerships and lots of detail guys swear by it to get the film out of used cars I picked up a Tandyvision a few months back that the box wreaked of smoke... I gave it a complete rub down even disassembled the controllers and it took about a half a roll of towels and it was NASTY but all the smell was gone, and the wife would know, she has a keen nose for the stank ! Give it a try
phaxda #21 Posted June 12, 2013 I've always taken the screws out, pulled the electronic stuff, put the plastics in the dishwasher. I'm pretty unhandy, but it's not a tough procedure and who knows what else might be in that case? I like seeing the old service tags and stuff.
+cmart604 #22 Posted June 12, 2013 You know, for a guy that has as many Intellivisions as I have, I've never taken one apart for any reason. Maybe I should just for fun. (by the way, there's no chance of it going back together correctly if I do, I guess I could just send the pile to pimpmaul to get modded at that point)
JasonlikesINTV #23 Posted June 12, 2013 I've taken a few apart....for detailing/repair. Also disassembled an Atari 2600 and a Colecovision. The Atari is the simplest & the Coleco was the trickiest.
+cmart604 #24 Posted June 12, 2013 I gave it a complete rub down Give it a try Funny thing is, Rev does that to all his Intellivisions, regardless of smoke damage or not. (I'll just say, he's not trying to clean them either, if ya know what I mean. )
