Etrian Odyssey IV not really 3D? (3DS Game)

Recommended Posts

So, I've been hankering for more RPG action on the 3DS side. I thought a 3D dungeon crawler would be perfect.. er, then I popped in this cartridge.

It's NOT 3D!!! It's more like a 2D movie converted to 3D after the fact. Everything is flat like a viewmaster slide. What gives? It's like the menus are one flat 3D layer and the maze (although rendered in 3D) is another flat layer just a bit deeper in. Has anyone else noticed this?

I know Atlus makes some games that are not 3D for the 3DS. I think Devil Survivor Overclocked is one of them. I didn't know about Etrian IV as I don't have either of these games.

I did get an email a few weeks ago about an upcoming game and they said something about "please don't worry there is nothing wrong with your 3DS, this is not a 3D game" or something along those lines.

Maybe they have been getting some confusion in their forums.

The 3D in that game was pretty bad. Though in generally I don't like the 3D effects as they hurt my eyes (that really can't be good!) but at least games like Luigi's Mansion give you a good sense of depth. Etrian Odyssey IV, I'd t urn it on and just see doubles of the enemies (guess I was holding the 3DS wrong)

Fortunately besides the visual gimmick, it is an awesome game. Keep looking if you want a 3D dungeon crawler though =( (and let me know if you find one, I'd check it out!)

That would suck if Devil Survivor Overclocked was the same. I happen to dig the Persona series. If anyone wants to chime in with more "not-quite-3D" games please do!

I don't play it with 3D on. The 3D slider on my 3DS XL hasn't moved out of the OFF position in some time.

I respect your personal preference. I, however, see the sole purpose of the 3DS is to play 3D games. It seems exploitive to shove out a 2D game for a console whos major feature is a true 3D display.

That's fine. What I was kind of getting at is that the 3D on Etrian Odyssey IV is so forgettable and so extraneous that I don't worry about it, so I'm agreeing with you.

But then again, I don't even see much of a qualitative difference between the alleged best (Fire Emblem: Awakening) and the games where it's poorly implemented. Aside from that I'd bet that most of the Atlus games and JRPGs are going to fall on the Etrian Odyssey side of the spectrum in terms of 3D.

Have you tried Fire Emblem? Heard good things. I haven't tried it yet myself but that's more of a tactical RPG.

Love the Persona series. Best RPG's on the PS2 imo.

@Loon: I initially got a 3DS for the 3D effect, and it delivered big time. The problem is that it makes me sick. :( Also, with MK7, I am constantly moving the system around, which of course breaks the 3D. I find that very high res graphics (the Vita w/OLED, for example) seem to appear nearly as 3D but without the sickening effect for me.
