Cleaning an Atari 800 - best products in US?

Recommended Posts

Picked up an Atari 800 at a yard sale yesterday.

Full 48K and works great, but damn is it dirty!

Does NOT need a retrobrite, it is not discolored, but it look like it spend 20 years in someone's garage.

With access to a typical hardware or grocery store in the U.S., what are the best products to clean the case without damaging it?

I just used liquid dish soap or hand soap in the bath tub with hot water, case removed of course ;)

And a mild abrasive hand scrubber...

DOW bathroom scrubbing bubbles (aerosol spay) on the tan plastic (disassemble first). Use windex and a butter knife to clean the keyboard. The butter knife is to get the windex damp paper towel in between the keys. Do not, repeat, do not try to pull the START, SELECT, OPTION or RESET keys out of the top cover for cleaning. Leave them attached to the top cover retaining tabs. Those tabs are brittle and you will break them no matter how gentle you try to free the four buttons (LEAVE THEM BE). If there is dust bunnies, used compressed air.

Put the case on the top shelf of a dish washer on a low temperature setting.

Remove before the drying cycle!

Come out really well.
