PlayStation 4? Nah, the Xbox One’s worst enemy is Microsoft

Recommended Posts

"...

One of the biggest challenges facing the upcoming launch of the Xbox One isn’t anything the system will or won’t do, but is instead the messaging Microsoft continues to muddle regarding its new hardware. The turnaround regarding the constant online connection and used game policy will go down as an epic flip-flop (even if it was the right thing to do), and the hits keep on coming. Next up on the Microsoft confuse-o-tron comes the news that there will be a headset included in the bundle. Or not. But maybe. But probably not.

Why don't you guys just start one Xbox One bitch thread? Seems like then all your gripes would be in one place so you can dwell on them and help justify your decision to not buy one at the click of one link!?

I think it's clear that MS mishandled their PR in a major way. I would love to see what the preorder numbers are like.

I can't wait to get my hands on my shiny new PS4 though :)

Angry moycon is angry.

Why would you say that? Thoughtful suggestions make you think people are angry? Weird.

Here's some smileys for you iswitt..... ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) .

Because? I posted a link to an article critical of Microsoft or because I'm in wait and see mode on what console to buy?

Show of hands on who read this article? It is actually the opposite of a whine-fest and seemed a fairly balanced assessment of what is going on with the Xbone.

I did.

They have nobody to blame but themselves. Over....and over.....and over....and over again.

This is one of the most embarrassing console releases in history.

They beat the most embarassing operating system in history and they are backtracking on some features in Windows 8 as well.

Like I said. Ballmer is the worst. It starts there.

This is very true. I find it odd that MS since the original Xbox was very good at releasing detailed plans and sticking with them. They were also very open to suggestions and seemed to be willing to work at really getting things "right". But this time, wow, just a mess. They never released and solid info on anything. I wasn't sure how game sharing would work, not sure on the TV controls, not sure what paying for Live would include, etc. At this point, they would be better off not releasing this year and just do it mid 2014 and get everything figured out and let the public have all the info well before launch. Recent rumors that Sony made on the fly decisions on pricing, drm stance, and PSN after MS at E3 seems very plausible. Sony said just as little as MS but got lucky. I expect that from Sony though, not MS.

Those were the best years ever. The entire lifespan of the original Xbox and then maybe the first 3 or 4 years of the Xbox 360. They always were 100% about gaming and everything was designed around video games and people like us (for me, kind of like the PS1 years for Sony but better).

I think social networking\facebook and social gaming (even the Wii with motion games) had waaay too much influence within Microsoft. Hiring EA executives didn't help either.

Hopefully they change philosophy with the 180 they did, because it's beyond frustrating. Waiting could be a very good idea.

Any positive I can think of is that at least the games can hide a lot of the ugly.

Agreed. When the first major dashboard update occurred and the avatar characters appeared, I could tell something had changed. They wanted to cash in on the Wii craze. Then came the ads.. and then more ads, and then.. Yeah, I think you know what I'm getting at.

I was an avid supporter of the original XBOX, and kept that going with the 360 on day one. Like you said, they were all about the games. I also appreciated the light progression in the multimedia realm as well to enhance the overall experience, but not hinder its main focus (i.e., the games). Things like MP3 playback during games, a sweet visualizer (go Jeff Minter!), and downloading movies to the box.

I suppose the first major dashboard change was tolerable, but today it feels like it's mostly about spamming your face with unavoidable product placements, and that's not a system I feel good about turning on, period. I get enough ads everywhere else as it is already.

Add those Windows 8 RT tablets to the list.

Which does bring to mind the question, are there gaming press features with pundits talking about how Microsoft management needs to be fired?

I can see what you mean and I rarely see them. :|

HA HA! We will always be fanboys, and I'm no different. I merely advocate waiting and getting them all, in the end, when the details have been worked out, the great games are out, the price reductions have taken place, and the hardware corrections have too..

From 1988's film "Colors" with Sean Penn and Robert Duvall:

You have so many systems and games - and neither of these systems are even out yet so they're not going anywhere - that a wait-and-see strategy is so much better than wild speculation! It's not like you're starved for entertainment - or are you? Really?
