2600 vs 7800 picture quality

Recommended Posts

When working on Tumulus. I noticed that the Visual Quality of 2600 games seem to better on a 2600 instead of the 7800. I had always assumed the quality would be the same. Or maybe my 7800 just needs a tune up. Do other people see this same thing?

The rf output on my pal 7800 is dreadful. 2600 looks better than 7800 games, this is apparently to do with interference from Maria chip. Well know picture is rubbish on most uk model 7800's, I have owned 3 and they have all been bad.

My pal 7800 looks crappy too. Although I don't have a 2600 for comparison. I could imagine that a peritel/scart version of the 7800, which outputs rgb, would look much better.

It does. It looks crisp, it's totally dot crawl free and color bleeding free.

Tho, there is no RF 7800 here to make a comparison (or I heard there is, but I never saw one. I think someone mistaken a PAL unit that made it to France.)

I never ran a comparison on my 2600 Jr with SCART output to see if the game are really better looking or not, as in "does the 7800 render the colors better" and such things. I might do that if I have enough time.

I'm comparing between my jr and my 7800. Using the same cable, and TV RF connector. The colors are darker, and muddy on the 7800. While on the 2600 they are relatively crisp. I only have one 7800, so I'm not sure I want to mod it.

I think ALL 7800's should be modded, they are that bad.

And I think 1977 1978 heavy Sixer 2600's should never be modded. The RF picture is beautiful!

Every year they kept making them the output got worse and worse.

This is just my opinion, though.

I may be the only one with the opposite experience. My games generally look better on the 7800, especially 2600 homebrews. I always assumed that it was due to better shielding on the 7800.

I've never opened it up. So I presume the shielding is still intact. I would open and tinker with it. But I would like it to display the way it would have, when released. The jr, I'll probably mod some day. Did technicians modify the 7800 like, they did the 2600?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the 7800 has one color pot that is used for both 7800 and 2600 mode. It can't be adjusted to make the picture the best for both modes. It can be either one or the other or adjusted between both.

I agree. My heavy sixer has a beautiful picture as far as the vtbrancy of the colors, but my 7800 has washed-out colors. I figured it was because my heavy sixer is a newer purchase, whereas my 7800 is ancient-- but from what I'm reading in this thread, it's a common experience.

I was hoping to save counter top space, and put away the 2600. However it seems I need to keep both out, or buy a second 7800 and mod it.
