power suppy question

Recommended Posts

I've never noticed this until this evening. My power supply got scorching hot. Is this normal? It was plugged in for about six hours and on for about two of them. I usually leave the plug in the wall, but tonight I put it all away and noticed that the power supply was extremely hot.

I don't think that is normal. I have a few different versions of the 5200 power supply and all of them get a little warm with use but stay cool when the system has not been used.

I let my 5200 run for 2 hours this morning and the power supply was barely warm.

This was the older type with the wires on the same side of the power supply.

I know the kind with wires on opposite sides of the brick gets a little more warm, but it is very far from scorching.

Normal or not, if it's so hot you get burned, or it could melt whatever it's sitting on (or catch fire), I would replace it. If it works and you really want to keep using it, I'd put a metal pan or something under it in case it catches fire, which can happen.
