"im selling an Atari 5200. it has only been used once and works perfectly and still has the original box and papers. comes with 3 remotes, pac man and dig dug. im asking 1000 but am willing to go a little lower."

This is not my ad, I'm posting it here because it is ridiculous.

I almost fell out of my chair when I read this! :)

We have a guy here who wants to trade his boxed 4 switch woody for a new 17" laptop with all the "bells and whistles." People are crazy!

I guess you guys missed my post about the 5200 ad I recently came across:

Like new, still has original plastic coating on stainless, 2 games; pacman&space invaders, Will trade for flatscreen TV

I've never heard of the games being reffreeroed to as cassettes. I have heard some call them "tapes". :ponder:

If anyone is reading this thinking "what should he ask for that?" - this was my response. I still went high on my estimates IMO:

Let me help you out a little here as I am an avid classic console collector. A 5200 even in its original packaging isn't worth more than it's original sale price. While it may seem like such a fine collectable item is worth more than it was back in the 80's, the market simply will not meet your asking price here. You can check many pricing guides that are around for a reference, but probably the quickest way to find out what someone might pay would be to look at completed auctions on ebay (where someone actually bid or agreed to buy).

You should include in your ad if this is a 4-port or 2-port system (how many controller ports on front). If a 4 port, does it include the proprietary switch box that connects it to power AND your TV? Have you tested it? Have you tested the "remotes" which are more often referred to as joysticks. Untested items drop quickly in value even if they are near mint. Completely unopened would be another story but still nowhere near what you are asking.

I'm not offering to buy, but I think what you've got here is probably worth:

4-Port 5200 near mint in box with proprietary TV switch, and power adapter - $120

***Without the switch would drop it quite a bit. If it is missing it also means you cannot test the unit which for me would drop the price to around $25

3 untested joysticks $15

***These are almost always non-functioning if they haven't been cleaned and re-furbished. Unfortunately, not tested means not working with these.

If it's a 2 port then you don't have to worry about the proprietary switch and the price stays up around $120, but you should test it and then ask for a bit more. Someone will probably pay up to $200 or maybe $250 for a nice clean system like that - especially if the joysticks have 100% working buttons. Note that is more than almost everyone would have paid for the unit new.

Lol, well yeah, but I've still never heard it. I've heard a couple of people call them tapes and get frowned upon for doing so. Basically saying "Atari tapes". Never actually saying "Atari cassettes".

They were collectively called tapes, cartridges, and cassettes depending on people's inclination towards the previous technology they were used to. For example -

Tape:

Cassette:

Still, they should have known better. There are differences. Tapes and cassettes have moving parts for one.

I was at the local Salvation Army yesterday with a friend and this particular location has a really good selection of cassette tapes for $.25ea. Between the two of us, we typically purchase 2-3 dozen tapes when we visit. This last time, the lady behind the counter was explaining that they have 3 boxes of tapes in back that need to come out. My friend asked if we could peruse them while we were there and she basically flat out refused. Said they'll put them out tomorrow.

So, I stopped in today to see what was up with the latest stash, when I caught them in the act! There they were... 3 boxes full of CD's, VHS tapes and DVD's. Absolutely NO audio cassette tapes to be found anywhere in those boxes. :rolling:

I used to try and "help" CL posters with old typewriters I collect...most of the time profanity was the response, maybe a few death threats. I stopped. I think one of 2 things go on, they're dumb as a post, CL is perfect for them. They think you're dishonest for "helping", just trying to talk them down to "steal" their prize.

Also ran into sellers who's profanity was smart enough and worded to make me think they knew exactly what they were doing. I think that's pretty smart too. For every CL poster with an IQ of a grape there are 100 CL readers ready to fall for crap. Costs zero to post and any you don't get a lot of responses you have to deal with. Instead when the phone rings you have a pre-qualified sucker. I've meant lots of people who think if something is on CL it must be cheap and do no research.

I feel very old...I remember lots of people called game cartridges cassettes or tapes back in the day. These were people who never played games so they really had no idea what the deal was.
