Is there no 2600 emulation for the iPad?

Recommended Posts

Looking around on the net, I didn't find any emulators or videos of 2600 emulation for the iPad. Does anyone know if there is any 2600 emulation currently running on the iPad?I don't have one, but still want to know. I suppose there is no ios version of Stella. Also wondering, if you can hook an Atari CX-40 joystick to the stelladaptor to USB to lightning connector, and actually play 2600 games on an ipad with an original 2600 controller. (with an emulator) That was be pretty awesome.

There was one for Jailbroken iOS.

2600.emu

Works with Bluetooth controllers like the Wii remote with classic Game Pad, iCade, and touch screen controls.

It was up to date at Stella 3.8.1. It is a shame that it is gone!

It helps in my 2600 batari Basic development.

I don't have a Stelladapter, I don't think that would work.

Jailbreak turns the iPad into a computer with file system access, downloading, uploading...

I do copy ROMs to SD cards for Harmony and PSP, so the iPad does have USB with the camera connector (unlike the half truth that Windows tablet commercial says).

Infogrames/Atari SA had Apple take down all emulators some time ago because they planned on coming out with the Greatest Hits.

Actually, I knew about these two, Atari's greatest hits looks like Arcade games, while Activision Anthology is 2600 Activision games. I was wondering if there is something similar to Stella, to just emulate the Atari 2600 in general. I am especially curious if, given an emulator, you could USB an original-type controller to the iPad. The lightning connector would have to convert or connect to USB, and the controller would have to have an adaptor to USB(like stelladaptor) or be a new USB "retrocontroller" like the ones sold on Retrothing.com. Imagine how cool that clear controller would look connected to an iPad.

Atari's Greatest Hits has both arcade and 2600 games. I have the full version and I can confirm it has both. Also, if you take a look at the screens on the app store, while they don't show screens of the 2600 games, there are screens of the menus that clearly list games like Yar's Revenge that were not in arcades.

Edit: doh. Beat me to the punch and with a nice screen shot to boot.

Indeed, look at the little tabs on the bottom. You have to click the joystick to get to the 2600 games, otherwise it's all arcade.

I read post #3 about the 2600.emu but you mentioned it was not available any more. Sometimes I'm only on the net for a minute and such, so I have to write back later. As for the arcade hits, thanks, I did not know there was 2600 games on there. But what I am seeking is something where you load your own games, rather than a compilation where you use what is offered. Something like Stella that is still available or in development for i-os. I was just wondering if there is a way you could play any ROM you want, and connect an original controller or a new retro one to emulate the 2600, like you can on a laptop or typical computer. It just seems neat to be able to play 2600 games on an ipad with an atari controller, or even a USB "bohus blahut" one. And not to mention it would look sick with the clear joystick, blue light, and white iPad. Playing Air Raid, no doubt, ha. Maybe it's early for emulation on the iPad?

Apple doesn't allow unauthorized software on their iOS devices. If you want to side load ROMs you will have to jailbreak it.

Lol, those aren't Bohus's, those are ours (Syzygy Co, formerly Legacy Engineering). We just licensed that specific see through version for Bohus to sell.

How'd you think of a name like that for your company? Kidding. When Nolan Bushnell couldn't get it back in the day (Wasn't it taken by a beekeeping company or something already?) how come you guys have the name? Great joysticks, got the clear one as a gift, saw it on the retrothing website. I believe I saw your site once before when the 7800 add-on came out. While this looks amazing, it seems as if there is no software for it. The idea of making repro controllers with modern connections is great. A lot of people have ruined old hardware like atari cartridges to make weird designs, lamps, and other stupid things, which wouldn't be bad if it didn't destroy original vintage stuff in limited supply. But to make new stuff that doesn't destroy the old is great in itself. To make these kinds of products are retro gamer's dreams and have a potential in the mainstream market if they are cheap and convenient (USB sure is). This could be the beginning of a killer product line! That would be awesome to have paddles and especially a driving controller. I will be doing an article about retro products fans would like to see and products that exist only in the imagination. I will definitely mention your site, as these are

the types of products I would have mentioned. When I used the joystick, the only negative feedback I can think of is the controls seemed a little jumpy, and I have not determined if that is even the stick or if Stella is running a little too fast. I notice it is different playing on the real console and on a laptop with this product. I would have to say overall this is one of the best retro products to come out! I think that the SEGA ultimate portable and this joystick are the 2 best retro products of the year. The SEGA allows ROMS to be used with an SD card and that is the appeal. It would be awesome to see a portable 7800/2600 with SD card port similar to this Genesis product. @ LS 650--I know you can read pdf and epub on iPads, but do you know if you can read .txt. and .doc? Like you said, they don't allow or want 3rd party (oops, I mean un-authorized) software on their system. @ iesposta, about your post cloaked in invisibility, is 2600.emu found somewhere to download in old versions?

It was Nolan and Ted, and the story was it had been reserved for another company in California by a law firm. Not sure where the beekeeping idea came from, maybe you're confusing that with the candlemaker company which also was based off of confusion (their original location had a candle manufacturer next door). The reservation by the other company never happened, (and in fact it's suspect because the full reservation Nolan and Ted were trying was for Syzygy Co., not just "Syzygy" which was already in use at the time by several business actually).

how come you guys have the name?

Because it was never copyrighted or trademarked before, and because Ted is a co-founder of the new Syzygy Co.

I'm not sure where you got that from, there's already several well discussed games in development to use the XM's capabilities. Take a look through the 7800 forum.

Thanks, which is why when we got done doing the modern version of the 2600 controllers for the Flashback 2, we thought they'd be perfect to based a USB controller around.

. @ iesposta, about your post cloaked in invisibility, is 2600.emu found somewhere to download in old versions?

Short answer: Yes.

I am waiting to hear from Robert about what is going on.

He was charging $2.50, but you could compile it yourself for free if you had a build environment for iOS and a jailbroken iOS device and knew how to sign an app. Maybe it is still available if you contact the maintainer? Like I said, I am trying to find out.

Oh, I see, interesting. I heard the Ted Dabney interview on Retrogaming Roundup podcast and that was very informative. I hadn't known much about Ted Dabney, and he told his story in the interview. Nice. I don't have an Ipad, but if I get one, I will have to learn how to compile and install that 2600.emu if I can find it. Lemme know if you here anything more on it, and I'lll do the same.

2600.emu is still available if you have a Jailbroken iOS device.

All his emulators are available for multiple OS's like Android, iOS, Linux, PS3, & WebOS by contacting the author.

Here are the 12 emulators you can run on iOS :

http://www.explusalpha.com/home

Nobody seems to want to talk about iOS emulators. I feel like the only one enjoying this magic.

Jailbreaking is not illegal.

Here is my iPad 3 running 2600.emu with Bluetooth Wii remote controller with Classic Gamepad Pro, running Space Rocks, a DPC+ modern program with ARM processor game logic. 2600.emu is based off Stella 3.8.1, and one based off 3.9 is due out soon! It can also use a paired iCade, and other Bluetooth controllers.

Emulators version 1.5.13 (Work In Progress):

Added 8:7 aspect ratio option to NES, SNES, & PCE when using regular zoom levels

Added larger 15 and 16mm on-screen control sizes

Fixed Confirm Overwrite State option not affecting states saved via key press

UI tweaks: Updated icons to flat Android-style for cleaner look, added new icons to make certain actions more intuitive (ex. when selecting a directory, the file browser shows a check-mark to confirm instead of an X), slightly improved text rendering and blending quality

2600: Updated core to Stella 3.9

2600: Added option to control TV phosphor simulation which is used to avoid flickering graphics in some games that display half the sprites on alternate frames

C64: Fixed setting FastSID option, and default to ReSID if available in port

C64 & MSX: Added option to use a custom path for system/firmware files

GBC: Updated core to current GIT version of Gambatte with some small fixes and optimizations

GBC: Added option to use special built-in palettes for classic GB games recognized by the GBC hardware

NES: Updated core to current SVN version of FCEUX with some mapper fixes, and an extra fix for Top Gun

NES: Fixed cheats not saving on iOS/Android if the app exits after being backgrounded

Android: Use scaled DPI coordinates to calculate the on-screen control sizes instead of physical DPI coordinates by default since many devices report incorrect physical screen sizes. The new Size Units option controls the coordinate type used.

Android: Improved audio-backend with low-latency support on Android 4.2+ and 48KHz sample rate if device supports it

Android: Registered file types supported by each system with the OS so it's possible to launch a game using an external file manager

Android: Added default key profiles for the Nvidia Shield

iOS: Fixed screen size issues when starting with status bar shown

Linux/X11: Treat the first command-line option as the game/directory to load upon launch

Linux/X11: Added experimental multi-window mode. Currently just mirrors the game video but will be used to implement native external display support for Android & iOS with separate content on each screen.
