Super hero games on CV - why not?

Recommended Posts

I've always like Batman video games. Yet I have never seen one on Coleco, or a Superman, or Spiderman, or any other comic book hero game.

Was this a licence issue?

Second question is why hasn't someone made one yet? With the super game module needing to expand its library this sounds like the perfect opportunity to me.

The reason Coleovision didn't have a game based on a super hero was due to timing in some instances. The fact is a video game crash happened.

I don't think there was an issue with Spiderman for why there wasn't a Spiderman for the Colecovision. I am saying that since Parker Bros. published games for multiple consoles including Colecovision. Spiderman for the 2600 came out in 1983 and I don't think Parker Brothers had a chance to officially release game console versions of Spiderman outside of the 2600.

I am bringing that up because Parker Bros. did the 2600 version of the game and there is a prototype version of spiderman for the Odyssey 2. There even is a rumor mill version of Spiderman for the Intellivision by Parker Bros.

I also know that based on the Digital press Collector's guide that Parker Bros. had plans of having an Incredible Hulk game for the 2600 that never was found as a prototype.

I think there was issues with Superman. I am mentioning this because there is a Superman game for the Atari 2600 by Atari and There also is a prototype version of Superman III for Atari's 8 bit computer line with Atari being the publisher. Atari was working on Superman III in 1983 for the Atari 8 bit computer line.

I really can't give answer with Batman back in Colecovision's lifetime since I don't think no video game system had a Batman game before the late 1980's.

I don't think any homebrew author wants to take a chance of getting sued doing a video game on a comic license without permission like Disney having rights to some of the marvel characters.

Yes with home brew releases, you can't really start using copyrighted characters and material when there still exists an active holder of that material. Even the current porting of MSX titles needs to be taken cautiously as Konami is still active in the market place.

Now that an active community of home brew releases has been established I look forward to more original titles being brought out for the Colecovision. Yes they might take more effort than converting an existing ROM but they are definitely worth while. I especially liked Princess Quest and Quest for the Golden Chalice (yes I know based on Adventure for the 2600).

There is no reason that one of the decent Batman platformers could not become an inspired game, changing the characters to something else but keeping the basic game play mechanics. Food for thought anyway.

Well known superheros come with lots of lawyers unfortunately. But there is not reason that there can't be Batman style games released but with an alternate version of hero that doesn't have the IP issues.

I can't see the companies that hold these copyrights rushing to defend them. The number of games released is too few to justify the cost. They have to pay people to research the game and verify that it does in fact include any of their intellectual property. Then they have to get one of there lawyers to write a cease and desist letter. (which in itself would cost them hundreds if not thousands of dollars) Given that most of the Colecovision publishers are not located in the United States further adds to the problem. If they decided to take the publisher to court it would take many years for a decision to be reached and possibly cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend.

I think that technically Nintendo doesn't care as Coleco have the license of Donkey Kong for Colecovision since the start and Eduardo is in communication with the holders of Coleco trademark.

I think it is for the module , not for the game.

I did some graphical experiment 2 years ago about spider man on colecovision. I have a very nice Title screen. :)...

Donkey Kong was removed from the original idea of packaging them with the SGMs when he went to coleco to talk about licensing.

So basically no there is not deal with nintendo.

Popeye is a superhero with his magic spinach strength, and he was a comic book character. He doesn't wear tights or a cape, though...

Popeye has a kind of cape.. a little one... :)

Let's really get some poor Homebrew programmer and distributor in trouble and do a LEGO Batman game. Better yet, maybe a LEGO Spider-Man game seeing as this hasn't been done for any system yet.

I always thought the first Batman game on Game Boy would be totally doable on the ColecoVision, although you'd probably need a MegaCart, and not sure how well the screen would scroll horizontally in the CV version. :)

That would be awesome. Really cool to say that our games are going to be awesome from an super awesome programmer  . My goal is to make awesome games. Only drawback I have is getting time and focus to work on the game in progress. I was going to work on one of them today, but I needed to nap since I am going out later. Once I get the games making backlog caught up, then I could try to make a super hero game with Youki. I am hoping to try to get one of my game to RC I'm making by the end of this month.
