VGC1612 #1 Posted August 8, 2013 It may sound noob but is it be possible to play vertical games on a horizontal CRT screen?
Cynicaster #2 Posted August 9, 2013 Sure. I have a 4:3 CRT monitor in my MAME cabinet; it works great for vertical games. The only thing is, you obviously have some “dead space” on either side of the game image, but it’s not such a big deal if you use a large monitor (i.e. 20” or larger). +FujiSkunk #3 Posted August 9, 2013 Back in the old days, no, not without some serious reprogramming of the game that would inevitably look really ugly (dropped scan lines, squished game graphics, etc.). Nowadays, you can do so very easily, especially with MAME set-ups like Cynicaster described.
VGC1612 #4 Posted August 9, 2013 I am relieved thank you.I will use a 50 inch CRT but if I want to play X-Men version 6 players, is he going to be full screen or I need to have two screen like the original arcade?
+FujiSkunk #5 Posted August 9, 2013 If you're using a PC with MAME or something like it, the emulator should be smart enough to resize X-Men's two screens onto one screen (MAME will for sure). You'll have some serious letterboxing going on, and the graphics may get a little blurry unless you have a hi-def CRT, but it will still work.
Cynicaster #6 Posted August 11, 2013 It's funny you mention 6 player X-Men. A few weeks ago I fired that up on my cabinet just to see what it would look like. The good news is it worked, but as mentioned, squeezing 2 monitors into a single CRT screen requires some serious shrinking down of the two screens. Hate to say it, but I think you'll be disappointed.
