Sega Homebrew?

Recommended Posts

There is for the Dreamcast. I personally would like to see some new Master System games myself!

Is there a big homebrew movement for the Genesis like there is for Atari and NES? Where should I start?

Not huge by any means, it's still pretty big and getting bigger. You would start by checking the forums over at SpritesMind and at SEGA-16.

SpritesMind is a must for developers. You'll find much info on programming along with tools and examples and demos and everything. SGDK is a nice toolkit for homebrew on the Genesis.

If you're looking for Master System homebrew help, go to the SMSPower forums. You'll find tools and examples and docs and demos there.

If you want to start out easy (or are just feeling lazy), give Basiegaxorz a try. That's the BASIC compiler for the Sega Genesis, and it's capable of making games. Unfortunately, one of those games was the dreaded Crazy Bus.

I don't know how much harder the compiler can be pushed, but there are a LOT of commands and functions available, including some that access the Sega CD and 32X. Just... just try to ignore the tap-dancing penis offered as the compiler's mascot.

What about reproductions? I've seen lostclassics and game reproductions thanks to a yahoo search.

The prices are a bit steep compared to ebaying used Genesis games. Any that I should look into?

That Fix-It Felix game isn't even finished yet! Put that one on hold; it's very good for a homebrew, but it's incomplete. Play the others in an emulator first before you take the plunge.

Pulseman actually looks good. I have no idea what the story is on it though.

It's a great platformer. Was actually made by the Pokemon developers, Game Freak... that's why the art & music are similar. The only official English language release was on the Sega Channel back in the 90s, so somebody made an unofficial translation which winds up on carts now.

<reaching for wallet right now>

By the way, if anyone's needing suggestions of 32X homebrews may I point out the following items?

Virtua Hamster

Heavy Machinery

And here's one I read about on NeoGaf, "Jet Ski Rage"??...

Zyrinx had a 32X project known as Nitrowrecks, but evidently very little is known about it. http://www.sega-16.com/feature_page.php?id=200&title=Developer's+Den:+Zyrinx

Nitrowrecks was the codename of Heavy Machinery.

Another 32X game that looked very good IMO ( on screenshots ) is Jet Ski Rage, sadly unreleased too.

I like to see more homebrew on the SCD as well, hey the Atari ST has the same CPU as the Genesis maybe someone can run with that.

Hey guys! I made this request in walter_J64bits cdx topic but it also applies here:

It'd be a BIG help if people could burn that .ISO in the cdx topic to a real CD and play it on a real SegaCD. If it works for people then that would be huge encouragement to make AtariAge Sega Genesis homebrew.
