CGQuarterly #3 Posted August 29, 2013 The reaction to the 2DS seems to be largely negative, but I like it. I might just pick one up since I don't have a 3DS.

Hi guys, It benefits people like me who have eye concerns seeing it has low resolution! So I like it Anthony...
Atariboy #6 Posted August 29, 2013 The 3DS could always be played in 2D. So this revision offers no benefit you couldn't of gotten on a 3DS or 3DSXL.
goldenegg #7 Posted August 29, 2013 The benefit is in the cost of the unit.

TwinChargers #9 Posted August 29, 2013 It doesn't fold? How do you protect the screen? I personally never cared much for folding handhelds. Damn portability and give me comfort! If we made it without folding our GameBoys, Game Gears and Lynxes, I'm sure the 2DS will do just fine.
UberArcade #10 Posted August 29, 2013 I like the design and the price is great. I always hated the design of the DS line. The hinges always felt weak. Hopefully this will be a more solid design. Kids are also tough on stuff. This design should hold up better with younger kids as well.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #11 Posted August 29, 2013 It doesn't fold? How do you protect the screen? Why by purchasing the $12.99 carry pouch SOLD SEPARATELY of course!
goldenegg #12 Posted August 29, 2013 Why by purchasing the $12.99 carry pouch SOLD SEPARATELY of course! A couple local stores I spoke with are apparently planning to bundle the pouch with pre-orders for the system, so that's a plus. I really do think it should have been included in the package though, especially since the available colours match the systems. I'll probably pick up a red system and a blue case, just for the hell of it
Austin #13 Posted August 29, 2013 It doesn't fold? How do you protect the screen? By not dropping the system.

NIAD #16 Posted August 30, 2013 For the extra $40 (the cost of a new game release), I would rather just go with the 3DS and that way I (or should I say my kids) have the 3D option available. The 3D is hit or miss seeing as my son prefers to use it while my daughter does not and the split/hinged design makes it a lot more compact / less cumbersome as well as easier to protect from damage. Maybe if the price difference was $60, then it would make more sense to me.
Osgeld #17 Posted August 30, 2013 I dont fully understand we had the DS then the 3ds which only had the selling point of the meh 3d effect now we have the 2DS, which is large and bulky why not just get a DS?
Atariboy #18 Posted August 30, 2013 (edited) Because people want new experiences. The 3DS offers far more than just an artificial 3D effect. And considering the age group that they're after, I imagine this is far lighter, smaller, and comfortable than it looks at first glance while sitting at your PC. Bulky handhelds and 5 year old hands don't mesh very well. Edited August 30, 2013 by Atariboy
MagitekAngel #19 Posted August 30, 2013 It looks a little silly, and let's be honest, it sort of seemed like a belated April Fools joke when Nintendo dropped the announcement, but at that price point, it's going to get a lot of people in the door. Eltigro #20 Posted August 30, 2013 I dont fully understand we had the DS then the 3ds which only had the selling point of the meh 3d effect now we have the 2DS, which is large and bulky why not just get a DS? I believe that the 2DS will be able to play all 3DS games, just without the 3D feature. It's like you have the 3D slider turned all the way down. The regular DS or DSi will not play 3DS games. So it's kind of an inbetween system. But as far as that goes, I'm with NIAD. Why not just go ahead and spend the extra $40 (or whatever the difference is, I haven't looked that closely at it) and get a 3DS. The 3DS will play regular DS games, right? mkiker2089 #21 Posted August 30, 2013 Does it play DSi games? One would think so but the press release said 3ds and ds games only.
godslabrat #22 Posted August 30, 2013 Does it play DSi games? One would think so but the press release said 3ds and ds games only. AFAIK, DSi is the same as DS. There is a slightly better chip under the hood, but the games are the same. There are a few games that only work on the DSi, but very, very few. Algus #23 Posted August 30, 2013 I've been criticizing it a bit and to be honest, I still think the 3DS XL is more than worth the price (the screens are gorgeous) but I am pretty curious to see this thing in person, and maybe play it a bit, before I pass final judgement. the 3D thing isn't a huge issue for me. I like it and play with it on at times but it is by no means a deal breaker. the 3DS is awesome because it has incredibly fun games, not because it has gimmicky 3D effects (those are just a nice bonus). Anything to get more people supporting this handheld and maintaining developer interest in it so I get more quality games.
mkiker2089 #24 Posted August 30, 2013 I don't like the design. The screens should be the same size since many games use it as an extended map. Also, if you eliminate the folding why not put the screens close together or even touching? I can see why they didn't go to one screen only, it would have broken the touch games. They aren't the same size on the 3DS either.
