problems with skunkboard/jcp/skunkgui/jiffi on WIN7

Recommended Posts

I've recently upgraded to windows 7 from XP, but I am having difficulties getting the skunk and jcp/dkunkgui/jiffi working with windows 7. I've already downloaded and installed the microsoft visual studio stuff, but jcp/jiffi/skunkgui still won't work properly. Are there additional patches or versions I need for use with windows 7? Maybe I have to use compatibility mode or something? It will take a while to get used to win 7 and know how to navigate it fluently. Any help appreciated and thanks.

I think not all XP version support USB very well it was SP2 or SP3 that had proper USB support.

Windows 7 is the best with USB support.

I don't use xp any more, and I had no problems with the skunkboard and USB with sp anyway. I'm using 7 now, but I may have forgotten to re-install and just tried executing the file.

They say that with every version of Windows since 95c. Which was mostly true then. However they will be saying the below in a few years about 7. Upgrade to 8! 7 doesn't support USB very well! Upgrade! Upgrade!

However in his first post he states he is not using XP anymore and its an upgrade to 7.

I read that indeed.

Upgrading from one OS to another is EVIL don't do it, better just a real clean install.

Windows 7 supports lot's of USB controllers haven't found one that didn't support a chipset, but when the system is to old or a very weird USB chipset could cause it aswell.

Unplug skunk

Goto windows device management and remove the skunk drivers (uninstall and select remove)

Reboot system

plug in skunk again it will detect the skunk, install driver and it should be ok now. Also look for and ? signs in the device manager when you have some please post a screenshot.

I had a similar problem, IIRC it was related to where I had the SkunkBoard files located on my HD, once I moved them Windows 7 was able to find them and it was fine, certainly as far as JCP goes, I don't use the others.

Hopefully if you use the device manager you can manually tell Windows where to look for them and all will be fine (can't remember if I tried that) otherwise you may have to relocate them as Windows 7 seems to be less pliable in that regards then XP/Vista - I think with Windows 7 Microsoft took a force people to put files where we want them & the less they can cock things up and the faster we can sort problems out approach.

I think I'm missing something either literally and/or figuratively. I re-downloaded the skunk files from reboot and unzipped them, but there doesn't seem to be any setup/installation file to run. Is installation for the skunkboard driver merely going into the devices menu and selecting the proper USB device and then look for and install the driver through that? I didn't recall having to do that before...I'll try that next. But I will also attempt moving it all to the root directory too. And of course try deleting, and reinstalling the device & driver.

Nope, Reboot doesn't host the full Skunkboard drivers + docs + what have you, only jcp.exe is bundled with JiFFI. And that's because I wanted people to fiddle less when setting up JiFFI (and of course because Tursi kindly released everything regarding Skunkboard to the public!). What you're after is the drivers + docs package from http://www.harmlesslion.com/cgi-bin/onesoft.cgi?110 - grab that and follow the installation manual.

Personally I had success installing the Skunkboard usb driver with two Win7x64 machines and one Win8x64, so I think you're just a few clicks away from having it work. Good luck!

Gunstar, you probably just did what I did when I went to w7 - forgot to install Tursi's drivers... a few moments of WTF and then a distant memory of needing drivers after unplugging and reseating everything a few times without any change :0)

Thanks guys! I got it working, I may have done it ass-backwards or something, being new to Win 7, but it seemed like I had to jump through a lot more "hoops" to get it installed (even after making sure I have all needed files). Why do I hate each edition of windows more than the last? it seems like with every improvement, they screw 2 other things up!

Hi good to know you got it working, stay on win7, I have Win8 and Win8.1 but both are very bad. At first it seems that everything works like win7, installing software without error's but lot's of software behavior like crashed and other things happen on win8. win7 seems to be the best choice, when you hardware is older XP should be the best option.

But you always can use a virtual machine to install WinXP or Windows 8 to use with the skunk, the the underlying HOST OS can be Linux or Windows this way every keeps working even after upgrading the HOST OS.

Sorry to derail the thread but...

Nope, sorry. I've got win8 for 8 months now. No crashes, no problems with installing software (or well, in 99% of the cases I've trired). You're either doing it wrong or you're sold on this massive FUD campaign :).

Hi! I would love to know what you did. I have the new Skunkboard and it's basically not installing on Windows 8. I've gone into device manager, and even used the feature to install a Legacy Item. It tells me there was an error installing and that the driver is not signed.

As far as I know, all drivers must be signed in Windows Vista+ / 64 if they are to be 64-bit. Wouldn't that need to be the case for this driver too?

Would love any help you can provide.

Thanks... :(

With all due respect, either the certs expired, or they were revoked by the CA... the drivers do not report as being signed.

According to the Skunkboard page, the software package has been updated just yesterday. Give it a try.

If that doesn't work, upgrading libusb should do the job, since the latest version includes signed drivers that are compatible with Windows 8:
