SEGA MEGA DRIVE QUESTION!?

Recommended Posts

Ok i bought teenage mutant HERO turtles tournament fighters for sega mega drive today. And i was thinking mega drive was the same thing as sega genesis???? But when put the game in on my genesis all that comes up is the konami logo on my screen and that game wont play? Ok so im guessing i need some adaptor or is the mega driver a whole other system?????? By the way my genesis is the first model if that matters?

Probably would need an adapter, if that game was made for a Genesis/Mega Drive not in your "region". Don't know what to suggest, though. And yes, they're both the same thing, though Sega's probably got regional lock-outs on those systems to prevent foreign gameware from playing on domestic systems and vice versa.

Some games do use a region lockout, some do not. Sometimes you can get around this by running the game through a GameGenie. There was also a device called a “Mega Key” or “Mega Adaptor” (or something like that) that would allow you to run foreign titles but I don’t know much about it.

Megadrive is the same thing as genesis BUT genesis is NOT the same thing as Megadrive.

Confused?

Megadrive has no regional lockout as far as I know (I can play Genisis and

Jap games on mine :) ). and Megadrive games can't fit into a genisis without

a modification (cart slot is to small)

But you can use a game genie as an adaptor. ;)

If you're feeling adventurous, you can modify your Genesis to include a language switch. It's fairly straightforward as long as you're handy with a soldering iron. I'm too lazy to provide a link, but if you run a web search, it should come up.

Here's a link to the GameFAQ's website for the Genesis hardware guides.

I think the language switch Ze_ro is talking about is in the "Import Games FAQ" guide.

The "Territory Lock-out List" guide shows what MegaDrive carts have the lock-out feature on them, and TMHT: Tournament Fighters for the MegaDrive does have a lock-out feature on the game.

That is simply not true, and contradicts what others have said. Just because a good chunk of games don't have region protection, doesn't mean NONE of them have region protection. The Genesis/MD are built to detect multiple languages. At first, this was simply used for games to detect the systems language and change to the language the game is set to. However, 1992 up games started detecting region as a way to lock the game out of said region. Oddly enough, many games post 1992 don't have any region protection. It's possible to make a switch for the Genesis to change the language setting and to switch from PAL/NTSC (some games not only lock out by region, but by PAL/NTSC too). The method is different for Genesis/MD 1, Genesis/MD 2, and Genesis 3, which Genesis/MD 1 being the easiest to mod. Some games with region lockout are Alien Soldier (JP/EU), Dynamite Headdy (JP, US one doesn't seem to have lockout, oddly enough), Streets of Rage 2 US, and Monster World IV.

The EU Model Megadrive 1 is very similar to the Genesis 1 and is still set to English. The only real difference is that the default region setting is PAL, not NTSC. The JP Model is set to Japanese instead of English, but is set to NTSC by default instead of PAL. Modding the systems is very similar, but with the traces in different spots.
