Killed a Jag tonight

Recommended Posts

Hasn't been a good weekend. The basement arcade flooded (games are mostly okay), I had to disassemble the water pump on the washing machine (it ingested part of a pillow) and now I've killed one of my Jags.

After the crappy weekend I was going to relax with a little Gorf and without paying attention plugged an NES power supply into the Jag. I wouldn't have thought that would have been this disastrous but there was a nearly immediate smell of ozone-y electronics and now it's apparently deceased. When I plugged the correct adapter in, the power LED stays lit regardless of the power switch position and nothing comes up on screen. (I did get the red Jaguar screen once.) I don't see anything obviously toasted on the board.

Sucks, although at least I didn't put the NES plug into the CD drive. Anyone got a spare, working Jag unit? Just need the console. ;)

NES adapters put out AC power. Bad news for anything that expects DC.

This is by far the most common way that Jaguars are destroyed. It also happens that the fix is cheap and simple: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/56960-jaguar-fix-when-wrong-polarity-psu-is-used-more/

I've had this happen to 2 Jaguars over the years, complete with smelly billowing white smoke, and both of them work just fine today. One needed the audio fix and the other didn't.

I've never done any surface mount soldering...not sure if my sausage fingers could be that delicate.

My hands certainly aren't steady enough for it. My neighbor does them for me. For someone that does this sort of thing those components are easy to handle. In his words the solder points are "huge". I guess perspective is everything.

I'm not sure what Ax's status is but you might check with him: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/193513-service-offered-atari-jaguar-system-repair/

You could also request repair service in the marketplace.

Exact same power pack (here in the UK at least).

Jeez. I might just put a little warning flag on my snes one then. Like those little flags you get on hairdryers in hotels that say don't use in the shower!!!

I had a friend do this who borrowed my Jag and forgot to take the power pack, and I did it once with an AC pack for something else, I got the plugs mixed up and blew my Jag. In both cases I fixed them myself.

i don't know how people can / do make this mistake.

yes the plugs are similar and fit in each other console. however, there are differences

see attached pictures both taken from US ebay just to make sure its the same as the UK, and they are

do you see the difference???

im sorry to put it bluntly but if you don't know what your power 'cable' plugs (hence i say cable) are like then its your own fault.

i have repaired this for several people now but it doesnt stop their stupidity.

The NES has ROUND cable, the JAGUAR DOES NOT < write this down at least 100 times!

i have many cables and plugs and jaguars and i have never done this....

Surely the best solution to this problem is to remove all Nintendo products from your home and place them into the recycling? Who needs Nintendo and all it's great software anyway when you have Kasumi Ninja and Club Drive? Idiots.

Well, yeah. Who else's fault would it be? :?

I had just put the NES in the entertainment center with about four other consoles, and had temporarily unhooked the Jag. When reaching through, I grabbed the wrong plug and stuck it in there. Occasional brain farts aside, I like to think that I'm otherwise fairly bright.

Oh, my Jag died in your arcade tonight
It must have been soaking wet
It just died in your arcade tonight

I keep looking for a signal I can't get
Broken carts lie all around me
And I don't see an easy way to dry off all of this
Her manual it sits on the bedside table
The tray is closed, the cats in the cradle
Who would've thought that a Gorf CD could warp like this

Which doesn't make sense at first. Then I remembered what happens when you become possessed and start playing Sunday Funday or Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde.

Don't..I've been feeling slightly derranged of late..if I had a NES that'd be the first thing I do when I get home, absolutely without a doubt. Have to be 9 inch nails though as the NES is quite thick.
