68HC000 Compatibility

Has anyone here replaced the stock CPU in an STFM with a 68HC000 (P16?). I've fitted a socket but get either a white screen or a white border with pink screen. Stock CPU works fine, so its not the socket or anything. And this is running at stock 8Mhz, i've not done any modification to the clocks etc.
