Everything in Yars' Revenge. Warshaw worked wonders with the TIA in that game.

The intro and death sounds in Pac-Man. Sure, the audio is a perfect example of what's wrong with Pac-Man as an arcade port, but you can't deny the sounds themselves are vintage VCS.

Pitfall Harry swingin' on a vine, as well as Harry's fateful missteps.

Death to the player in Space Invaders.

Death to the player in Maze Craze. I don't know exactly what happens when you get caught, but it doesn't sound pleasant.

The musical bits in Frogger and Midnight Magic. Not many games bothered to tweak the volumes of notes as they played (the "ADSR envelope" for you audio-geek types), but these two games showed the 2600 really could create tones with more dynamics when the programmers felt like it, and had the room to do so.

The intro and extra-life chimes in Stargate. Arcade Defender and Stargate had lots of neat effects the 2600 couldn't possibly duplicate. Even so, 2600 Defender actually did a fairly serviceable job, at least in the audio department. 2600 Stargate, however, was even better in that area. Maybe the 2600's sound effects weren't perfect recreations, but they definitely captured the mood of the arcade originals.

The sounds of my childhood:

The ship derezzing in Megamania, the sound of the shots hitting their nightmare targets, and the energy bar refilling.

The sound of the monsters approaching in Tunnel Runner..

The ship landing in E.T.

Getting electrocuted in Berzerk.

The march of the aliens in Space Invaders..

The humanoids being abducted in Defender and the planet exploding.

The sound of your ship firing shots in Star Raiders.

Cities exploding in Missile Command, and the final explosion sound when you've lost the game.

I'm not sure these are my favorites, I only know wha I don't/can't forget:

Mario moves in Donkey Kong.

The tentacle of Seaweed Assault.

Pacman's sounds. (my dad used to say for pacman's death 'le...vei fe...rro'; something like 'I... was... fu...cked')

Missile Command horripilant atomic bomb sound. :skull:

Last Space Invaders fast pace and then Brrrmmmmm... :skull:

Pitfall in the vines.

Every time on TV when there's a movie or commercial that has a scene relating to video games, you ALWAYS hear the jumping sound from the Coleco 2600 Donkey Kong. I hear it so much thus always reminded of it. Simple sounds, but memorable. So yes, the D.K. sounds are my favorites.

Pitfall II got mentioned already for the music, so I have to also mention Pressure Cooker which used no additional hardware.

The "embarrassing noise" made by Party Mix when the player's buggy gets bopped by a brick.

Death sounds in Montezuma's Revenge.

The ship landing in E.T.

That's my favorite one, but it has to be on a real Atari 2600. It sounds like crap in every emulator I have tried. I also liked the sounds in Demon Attack.

If we can include music in this, it's gotta be the music in Gyruss. Amazing what they could do with the system with no additional hardware!

For sound effects, Pitfall and Asteroids will always stay with me, as well as Space Invaders.

Pitfall II music!

Technically BGM, not SFX, but it is awesome. They kinda cheated though with the audio chip so Pitfall II gets an unfair advantage. I modded Pitfall II with a potentiometer for some crazy pitch-shifting fun!

Oh yeah. The death sound in Pacman is sooo bad, they just had to sample it in Beat 'em and Eat 'em! :lolblue:

Mario moves in Donkey Kong.

Seconded.

Between rounds of Xonox Artillery Duel, two soldiers march across the screen. Snare drums with a bit of reverb and a very military rhythm. Nicely done.

How about that loud crunchy fart noise that Reactor blasts out in its attract mode?

If it comes out of your couch and not the TV it doesn't count :)

Psh, everybody knows that Atari is meant to be played while sitting cross-legged on the floor.

yeah, I remember practically melting the shag carpet with some of my game systems.

There should really be a sound effect topic like the sprite thread started by PAC-MAN-RED.
