Atari 8bit Weekend finds and Q's!

Recommended Posts

Hey all

I was at a garage sale today and found the mother load of Atari 8bit collection.

I bought a huge box full of goodies for 40.00 and the seller tossed in a loose 130xe I wanted this because I noticed an aftermarket switch on the back near the power supply plug. It fired up into a different bios (see the screen shot) anyone have any more information on this David Young Omniview XE? ...

Also I got a mint condition Indus GT floppy drive it seems to work but I cannot get a disk to load that works on my 1050 drives. I just get a boot error.

The guy had a ton more 8bit stuff but I didn't have time to get to go through it all.

Also here is something you don't see everyday, The Puget Sound Atari News magazine.

At least a few years worth of news letters here with some pretty cool stuff inside!

Shinju,

If that picture with the dip switches is the back of your Indus, then the solution is simple. The drive in the picture is configured to be drive #4. Move the first two switches to the up position and check you disk again. Just be sure that this is the only drive connected for this test.

Once the test is successful, the drive can be configured as any other number (2-4) that is convenient for you. Drive #2 would be second dip switch up, first dip switch down.

Hope this helps,

Russ

Hello Russ

The first 2 switches I pushed up into the upper position, unless I am reading this wrong. Also the AUX switch is up to I do not know if that means on or off.

More importantly, what's this mystery garage sale guy's name and what's his address? :D

Would you be opposed to going back with a roll of cash?

Omnimon/Omniview were sold by Newell Industries. I am attaching ZIP files containing scans of the manuals/installation instructions that came with them, don't remember where I located them.

Thanks guys, I will post more photos of my lewt later on.

I would not be opposed to going back and grabbing more but keep in mind this stuff has been sitting for years and untested so just to put that out there.

My only problem is time :)

And yes I would love to put those news letters into PDF format but again it comes down to time. If a well established member here has the desire to do that then we can work something out!

PM me when you get some time and if your willing to loan them out. I've been scanning stuff for Atarimania.com for a while now and would love to scan them into PDFs.

Shinju,

Do you mean that when you first tested the first two switches were up and the Atari responded with "boot error"?

In my experience (and my experience is quite limited, to be sure), a dip switch is set in the up position and off in the down one when the switch is oriented like the one in the picture. Perhaps it would be best to try the drive with the aux switch down. I am not familiar with the functioning of the Indus drive, though, and I am sure there are others on the forum who know this drive inside out.

Let me add my congratulations on this great Atari gear/documentation find.

I tried almost every config on the drive, I am going to pull it apart and clean the heads. I am getting a Boot Error on screen and a G5 error on the LCD display.

And thank you everyone for the congrats! I still need to post the rest of the stuff lol.

Allan, I think I can fit all of those news letters into a Large FRB so shipping would be around 20.00.

Maybe someone will see this who uses an Indus GT drive and post a photo of their dip switch config as a master drive?

If the drive itself is showing an error (G5), then the Atari is communicating with it, it's not a question of DIP switch settings. The problem is with the drive or the disk you're trying to read. The head could be dirty or misaligned, the speed could be off... Can you hear the disk spin when the drive tries to read it? If not, you could have a broken or dislodged belt.

Here is a link to a page with the manual and software for the Indus GT: http://www.retrobits.net/atari/indus.shtml

For the error code, G = GET(read) while 5 = RECORD NOT FOUND ERROR

Maybe it doesn't like my Multi Game Disk. I know it has no problems booting on the 1050 drives I have. Maybe I will try just a single program disk and see what happens.

I can hear it spool up and stop and go again. My guess is that the heads could be dirty or out of alignment as suggested.

Congrats on the monkey wrench. Never got mine back when I retrieved my computer from the younger relatives I had to pass it on to. That was my entrance to assembly language world.

Pretty much. Seems to be a sought after commodity too. I need to find me a Salt cart! :)
