bfg.gamepassion #1 Posted October 16, 2013 (edited) Here is some WIP of my version of Tunnels à Trolls. There's lack à lot of thinks (spécial room like we can see on advertissment for example). This WIP is a proof of concept of using VRAM memory to store and modify object/monster in room. (If you take an object or kill monster, they won't reapper ...) I personnaly aim this game to be a survival fantasy. Weapon and life will be rare, so avoiding ennemy will be sometimes the solution ... My goal is : - 4 type of player : Warrior, Magician, Thief, Archery with unique speed/attack/life - 256 rooms (implemented) with unique rooms (not yet designed) - 6 sort of monster, but some monster will have "clone" with différent AI and habilities - Bonus : Weapon, Life, Key, Torch, Fire protect ... - Trap - ... more ideas to come ... The WIP in video take 10 ko of 32 ko with the full labyrinth, but with no unique rooms, and not all the sprites. Graphics are from Crapahute ! http://youtu.be/2_TGq3SNB9c Edited October 16, 2013 by bfg.gamepassion
cimerians #2 Posted October 16, 2013 (edited) I've been waiting my whole life for this game. lol Looks like a nicer looking Gateway to Apshai, will it be a survive-the-dungeon and make it out with the treasure? or a multilevel dungeon like Apshai? Keep it up and count me in! Edited October 16, 2013 by cimerians
+bennybingo #3 Posted October 16, 2013 I love it!!! Count me in for this one. Awesome!!!!
ColecoDan #4 Posted October 16, 2013 I like all the bad guys they look pretty cool but where are the trolls. Although with watching you move through the rooms if you are going to limit weapon shots I have no idea how you would get through these without your special walk through ability that you had in the demo. Cool, as always your work is amazing. It would be cool to finally have tunnels & trolls.
+Gemintronic #7 Posted October 16, 2013 Is this an homage to the role playing game? I wonder if this could be an official game! http://www.flyingbuffalo.com/ Also, how do I find out more on how the gameplay works? What's the goal?
+Ransom #8 Posted October 16, 2013 It looks really nice, and seems like it will be very fun game! Will the placement of monsters and treasures be predetermined or randomized?
Bill Loguidice #9 Posted October 16, 2013 A much needed game type on the ColecoVision. Looking forward to it!
bfg.gamepassion #10 Posted October 16, 2013 The maze is predetermined. The placement of treasure and monster is randomized and put in maze at the game start. The object needed to finish the adventure won't be randomized. I think you'll need to do a paper map to finish the game. The goal will be to find the big treasure, but the problem to find it will be a dragon. Will you find a way to kill it ?

The Adventure sword would be cool: I actually have the original paper and pencil game from the 70's and one of the more recent versions. It's always been a kind of tongue-in-cheek type game. nanochess #13 Posted October 16, 2013 This looks pretty nice . I would suggest strongly to randomize also the final treasure location, not over all map, but 3 or 4 places. Another suggestion: small puzzles to solve in order to advance a room, by example, kind of moving two rocks, shooting rocks in order, and so.
Pixelboy #14 Posted October 16, 2013 This game reminds me of the "Dungeons & Dragons Computer Fantasy Game" Game & Watch. The ColecoVision definately needs more games like this.
+Gemintronic #15 Posted October 16, 2013 Is this influenced by the ADAM demonstration? I can only find one mock-up screenshot from that version.
Gabriel #16 Posted October 16, 2013 Is this an homage to the role playing game? I wonder if this could be an official game! http://www.flyingbuffalo.com/ Ken St Andre and Flying Buffalo have been burnt pretty badly by James Shipman/Outlaw Press "licensing" the right to do material for Tunnels & Trolls game and then basically selling bootlegs (packed with other copyright violating material) for decades.

That sucks. I got excited about making a 2600 version and recently asked about getting permission. Still, anything like this is a longshot. You never know

+Gemintronic #19 Posted October 16, 2013 What? You need to do that! Hopefully they give you a reply. I just got the first reply. Rick Loomis was quite a bit suspicious and put off. I might try again via snail mail. It's not over yet.

yell0w_lantern #22 Posted October 17, 2013 (edited) Ken is supposed to be pretty easy going. I imagine the most successful method would be to actually meet him/them at a convention. Just to be clear, T&T rpg does not have a thief or an archer (unless you count the specialist class in 7th edition). There are only Warriors, Wizards, and Rogues. cimerians #23 Posted October 17, 2013 I met him Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax over the years. All very nice people. Gary invited us to some D&D sessions at his place in the mid 90's. Fond memories of these people and really grateful I lived not too far away from Lake Geneva as we always went to Gen Con when it was there. So I'm glad there's a dragon and a troll in the game but I'm hoping for some references like Buffalo Castle etc.
bfg.gamepassion #24 Posted October 17, 2013 So many reaction, ... I prefer add precision ... Finally i really ask me if this game should be name Tunnel & Trolls. Why ? First, i didn't know that it was a paper RPG ... The only thing i had for making this game is : A rom showing an intro with a dragon, and 2 screenshots (Here : http://www.jeffbots.com/coleco/tunnelstrolls.html and http://www.sacnews.net/adamcomputer/upcomingreleases.html). Second : Copyright Third : This is not a RPG, it's a survival game with a goal. No XP earned, no weapon/armor upgrade. So no "specialist class in 7th edition" or no "Buffalo Castle" because the game is only about Dungeon/Dragon. So the game should be name Subterrain&Snake, or Dungeon&Dragons (). I don't want to make a bad buzz with this game ...
