Boulder Dash (R) For Intellivision

Recommended Posts

I got to spend about an hour playing it this morning and I feel like I made the right choice. As far as I can tell, the gameplay is spot on and I actually like the colors used in the INTV version over what is on the A8. The packaging was super impressive too. This transaction has made me want to look into the couple of other recent INTV games that have been on my radar. Thanks for the guidance all!

Attention Collectors!

Boulder Dash for Intellivision will be discontinued this year!

This game is much rarer than many other Intellivison games such as 'Space Patrol'. And, you know what happened to prices on that game.

If you haven't gotten a copy yet, don't miss out on a very high quality port of this million copy seller.

Sales will end sooner than you think! Get your copy today!

Some people have been messaging me regarding a ROM release for use on a cuttle cart and/or emulators.

Unfortunately, there will be no ROM release for the cuttle cart or for use on emulators.

There will be a ROM release for LTO Flash! when it ships, but this will be sold as a separate product. So people who wish to play the game on a flash cartridge or purchase the game on a budget will have the option as soon as LTO Flash! ships.

Any change in heart to offer a rom purchase? :)

There will never be a rom release. Sorry.

Out of curiosity, how does ownership go with something like this? Intellivision port owned by the programmer, and First Star retains the actual Boulder Dash license? So both parties would have to agree to any future release (in whatever format)? Does Elektronite have any rights to the game after August?

Yeah, I'm delusionally dreaming about a Flashback 2 today. Sigh.

First Star Software, Inc. owns the game fully. The source and binary and rights after the contract expires.

In Canada the author always keeps moral rights, its not something that can be transferred like copyrights. But moral rights can only be flexed in certain situations, for example if someone turned your game into a porno, it could legally be stopped with moral rights.

Well, you all sold me. I picked it up and got DK Arcade as well. Looking forward to trying both of them.

Ordered a Boulderdash, although I never owned any in the mid-80s, somehow I missed out.

I like DK Arcade best because it has the Japanese logical screen order and D2K doesn't. D2K has the orig game, just not the Japanese order of barrels - kong takes the girl, orange pie factory - kong takes the girl, elevators - kong takes the girl, rivets - Jumpman rescues the girl.

Fun fact: The extra game over tune and the speech sample "help" are actually in the arcade game ROM, just never used!

Even more fun. It is on sale for $45! :-P

Thanks for the support on Boulder Dash! We appreciate it!

Someone recently said to me that they thought that the end of the contract was a 'marketing ploy'. Make no mistake, this game is going away on August 16th and will not be available at www.naberhood.com after that. If you want a copy, pick one up.

Speaking of Marketing, many of us use AtariAge as our primary, and sometimes only, RetroGaming news source.

Have you done much advertising outside of here?

I took a quick look and don't see anything in the Reddit /r/RetroGaming subreddit, you may want to place a post there with the full, legally authorized release and impending sales stoppage details like you did in post 431

Indeed. Atari Age is an important source of people interested in new games for the Intellivision, but it is not the only source of customers. We've been spreading the word on facebook and other places such as Retro Gaming Magazine.

Thanks for the idea on Reddit. Please help spread the word that the availability of the game is ending soon.

I am re-amazed each year at how little new legit Intellivision stuff is marketed. Paid Search on Bing and Google, web presence optimization (SEO), Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Yelp, YouTube, Vimeo, display ad networks, etcetcetc. Whether it's independent/homebrew carts or the Intellivision Flashback, we don't see enough of the message outside of AA.

I'm not convinced that a niche item like new Intellivision games would be worthwhile for paid searches or advertisements on facebook. I think that the free advertising available is just as effective. The game IS being mentioned off of AA.

$1000 in advertising to sell 5 more copies? No thanks.

The people who are interested in this stuff generally know where to find it. Sure there are always a few in the dark, but it's not like there are thousands of people who still play their Intellivisions regularly, and would gladly pony up $50-100 for a new game, that have no idea about any of this.

An event like PRGE sees tens of thousands of people attend, people who specifically are into retro gaming, and Intellivision homebrew sits unsold on Sunday.
