Austin
John Carmack has apparently resigned. Thoughts? Link: http://www.polygon.com/2013/11/22/5134500/id-software-founder-john-carmack-resigns
jaybird3rd
Interesting. Maybe I'm imagining things, but those statements from id and Bethesda have a distinct "don't let the door hit you on the way out" vibe to them. I'll be curious to see what he's able to do with Virtual Reality. As some of the commenters to that story point out, Carmack has always been more of a technology guy than a game designer. Christophero Sly
Sounds like he had a rift with management.
+Allan
The real reason he is leaving is that he has always been jealous of Howard Scott Warshaw programming Raiders of the Lost Ark for the 2600 so he is going to devote all his time to making a version for the 5200 and 8-bit computers. Austin
Didn't this happen months ago? I believe months ago he stepped down but was still in another role (I suppose whether he was actually still doing anything is another story all together). Now it seems like he's out of the company completely.
Hyper_Eye
He was going to stay on as a consultant but instead he is out altogether.
MagitekAngel
I wonder how Doom 4 will turn out. Rage was competent, but unremarkable for much else other than its visuals. Edited November 24, 2013 by MagitekAngel
doomwaves
Depressing.. I know he hasn't had a hand in development in a bit, but its still sad to think that it's really over.. I have high hopes for Doom 4, and wish for a Quake 5 also.. But if either one come out, it won't be the same.
MrMaddog
I wonder how Doom 4 will turn out. Rage was competent, but unremarkable for much else other than its visuals. He said the engine work is already done so all that needs to be finished is the game content, which isn't Carmack's strong suit TBH. I hope things work out for him at Occulus Rift cause I liked the old id games.
