Does anyone have a copy of disk "972-2" from the Tigercub collection that isn't corrupted?

See:

ftp://ftp.whtech.com/emulators/pc99/tigercub/972-2.DSK

also found here:

http://www.theoldcomputer.com/roms/index.php?folder=Texas-Instruments/TI-99-4A/Various/

Neither site has an uncorrupted disk "972-2 / 972". Thanks for reading :).

Here ya go. I don't know if it's the whole thing though or not corrupted. It's a PC99 format image.

Thanks acadiel! Sadly that disk is corrupted as well :(. You can tell by opening the disk in TIImageTool, then opening a file, if it's corrupted, it'll be packed with e5 throughout, as in this example:

000000: e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 e5 ................

If you use "Check filesystem" in the "Utility" menu you can make TIImageTool check each file for signs of corruption. Of course, in this case, it won't bring back the original contents. :-) (Have to add a time machine in some later release.)

Well, I just tried that out - it definitely found errors ;). Sure is a great tool - thank you Michael :).

Is this what you are looking for?

It is - thank you buddy :) - but unfortunately that disk image is also corrupted :(.

To find out how to tell, see my post above:

I pretty well scoured the internet looking - if we're going to find a good copy, it's most likely going to be in someone's personal collection, not posted up on the web (as far as I can tell, at any rate). I think it's worth while persuing this disk, because disk 972 isn't the only disk image in the Tigercub set that is corrupted, and if we can get a community-wide search going, we can keep the 'literature' up to date with working copies.

Bill is probably the best bet on this one. I have very few of the Tigercub disks, as I spent most of the time when they were readily available over in Europe, and very few of them showed up there.

Yep, and I just checked the Cyc... it's the same corrupted copy. Does someone have contact info for Mike Wright to tell him about it to see if he might have a different original?

Is Bill on AtariAge by any chance? I haven't signed up with the Yahoo! group yet... I suppose I should look into that.

Wouldn't the way to contact him be through the address on the CaDD website?

I've talked with Mike in the past and hasn't had any luck finding a "pure" copy either.

On another note, I got a pretty good chunk of the Tigercub library from Tony Zloterzinski and Dave Connery, but 972-2 wasn't one of those in either set.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just joined the TI-99/4A Yahoo! group and am waiting confirmation. I will be asking about this disk ASAP :).

I've really gotten a kick out of some of the other Tigercub disks - especially the astronomy ones. Did you all know that the moon phase and the planetary position programs are "Y2K compliant"? I was pretty impressed by how accurately they worked as well - pretty frickin' awesome! :D

Wow, what a find!    Thank you for looking out for me :).

But sadly the files are are filled with e5's still :_(

Edit: BTW, I pretty sure I haven't gotten the confirmation for the Yahoo! group yet, but I still haven't gone through all my email from the last two and half months.

I sent an email to the author of the Cyc asking if he had an uncorrupted disk #972 he could re-image.

Excellent - getting in touch with Bill is still up in the air with my Yahoo! registration. Perhaps I ought to re-sign up for that.....

Thanks for the help. I think it'll be worth the effort :).

I also emailed Bill Gaskill as well... so I'm hoping between him or Mike Wright, we can find a good 972. If not, then well, we're at the mercy of someone who might have one in their collection.

Here's what I got back from CaDD:

Thank you for discovering this error. The original Tigercub disks were copied by Charles Good and those are the ones CaDD supplies. I've gone back to the earliest known copy and it is the same. So it was either a bad transfer, or a bad original, most likely the latter since there is still catalog information on the copy. I just checked and do not have a 5.25" version of that disk. I will have to try other sources. If a copy is found, CaDD will email you the .dsk file.

And Bill Gaskill:

No luck in getting 972-2 to work, and I looked at 3 locations, from separate sources. They all show the same, which is to provide a disk catalog, but not much more.

I never bought any of the public domain disks from Jim Peterson, so I never had any, other than what was given to me. I think Mike Wright still has the originals, but we didn't discuss that topic when I visited him in Aug 2010.

Thank you so much for the help acadiel - don't hesitate to thank Bill and Mark(?) for me as well. Your commitment to helping find this disk was impressive - thanks again!

Too bad about that though, I thought it looked like a neat disk. Games (including a real Elite) are great, but I like making these old beasts do some 'real' computing even more :). I did have a feeling that this was going to happen. My biggest hopes were with Cyc disk, but since that's no good, I think we can safely say that it is lost :(.

Edit: Almost forgot my manners: thank you to all that chimed in on this as well :D.
