Gabriel #1 Posted December 2, 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25Z32y9OOBk Just watched this video, and it was interesting in the same way that observing human life from an alien perspective would be interesting. James and Mike really show that they're NES kids in this one. They're completely oblivious to things you'd think video game fans would know. For instance, they don't seem to be aware that Stargate was the official sequel to Defender. They also seem completely bewildered by the Atari/Sears Tele Games branding. They even jump to an odd conclusion that I don't think anyone who gamed in the early 80s would have, they think that titled game variations and individually released games with the same title are the same game. They even seem bewildered by simple label variations, as they seem shocked that a picture label game and a text label game both with the same title are the same game. They spend a good deal of time at the start of the video complaining about dead Ataris which makes me wonder just how bad condition some of their hardware and games are. It was funny watching them fumble around with Star Raiders, completely oblivious to the fact that it used the touchpad controller. StarMaster similarly stumped them. Oddly, they seemed just on the cusp of figuring out how Space Attack worked before giving up on it. I don't know how much of it was an act. Whether it was an act or not, the Stargate bit had me facepalming pretty hard.

karokoenig #4 Posted December 3, 2013 The AVGN rule "one minute max. of research per 15 video minutes" applied here as well. Ah, whatever. I had fun watching the video, because I don't expect any seriously researched review video from James. The Stargate and Telegames flukes were a bit embarrassing even for him, though. mkiker2089 #5 Posted December 3, 2013 I think the comments are a bit harsh. We forget that Atari games have little to no instructions since most people lost the books that come with them. Sure, if they took out their laptops and went to gamefaqs they could have done better but that wasn't the point.

Yeah as a kid who got a garbage bag full (no joke) of 2600 games and NO instructions as a kid from my step-sister, I could relate to a lot of what they were saying. mkiker2089 #7 Posted December 3, 2013 Indeed. You can tell that most of the games they have never played or at least have forgotten. I think people with large collections are often like that. The video was to give a newbie perspective. If they wanted to do indepth reviews or walkthroughs it would have been different. They even said in the video that they wouldn't remember one from the next. Actually I often play games like that myself. I'll grab a few at random and just pop them in. My collection, being small, is different though since I know all the games and how to play them.
OldSchoolRetroGamer #8 Posted December 3, 2013 Definitely they are more at home with the Nintendo NES era of games. I was still surprised to hear at the beginning just how much trouble they had to even get a 2600 working properly considering all the old computers and consoles I have seen James use in his videos. PFL #9 Posted December 4, 2013 It's just a video of two blokes playing some games. It's not a review show. I don't have a problem with that. I don't expect every game player on YT to know about every game. I don't expect them to research all the time either. If it was a review show then, yes, research is required but if it's just a couple of guys shooting the shit and having fun I don't see what the problem is. I enjoyed it though, I have to admit, I did shout at the screen "It's Defender II!"

That surprised me as well. I have a light six that was covered in dust, forgotten, and had mold inside it. I found it and brushed it off and it still works fine. Then again he also uses the coax connector rather than having a modded console. For game capturing alone I'm flumoxed that he doesn't have a modded console. He has a Nintoaster but not a modded light sixer? I bet someone will mail him one soon.
