Intellfan #1 Posted December 19, 2013 Introduced my 10 year old to Utopia tonight . She loves it . Even my 14 year old likes it. I told her it was the first Sim game or to put it in her terms the first Tiny Tower game she plays on her I pod . I had forgot how much fun it is . Been 20 years since I have played it myself.
BillyHW #2 Posted December 19, 2013 I love Utopia.
+thegoldenband #3 Posted December 19, 2013 I love it too; I just wish there were more to it, as my fiancée and I pretty much played it out. I can imagine a massively expanded Super Pro version with different islands to choose from, new structures to build, new events (earthquakes, floods), and a substantial 1P mode.

DZ-Jay #8 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) Sorry, I'm new to Intellivision. It's all right. What you must know is that Utopia is a "sim" game--actually, the very first "god" game ever, and the precursor of games like Sim-City and Civilization. It was an Intellivision exclusive and was very good and well regarded. Because of this, the term "Utopia" in this forum has no other connotation. If you haven't already, I suggest you get a hold of a copy. It shouldn't be expensive, for it is a very common title. However, you do need to play with a friend in order to exact any enjoyment out of it. There is no AI for a single-player game. You could play it alone, but it was designed to compete against a human opponent, and it is definitely more fun that way. -dZ. Gorfy #9 Posted December 19, 2013 Thanks for the info, DZ. I need to save up some $$ to get an intellivision console and then I'll make Utopia one of the first games I purchase

+save2600 #11 Posted December 19, 2013 One of my favorite Intellivision games! Utopia is excellent as-is, but deserves an update for sure. Be nice to have different islands and scenarios to play out.

They may still have the CD-ROM collection of games to be played in emulation on a PC.

Fushek #14 Posted December 19, 2013 I have very fond memories of Utopia from my childhood. It was the one game that my mom would play with me. I remember sending rebels against my mom and innocently claiming no responsibility while I giggled. I'm guessing that the giggling probably gave me away ...

Intellivisioner #16 Posted December 19, 2013 A cult-game to me. Just paid 19 DM for it, in early 1985, missing overlays and instructions. So I had to figure out the game rules for myself. Remember great sessions with my school comrade. We always got a panic attack as the hurricane moved over one or both islands. It was a revelation in the sim-game world! Now I am a proud owner of a copy signed by its designer Don Daglow!

Great fun I am sure we will be playing it a lot over Christmas break.
SoulBlazer #18 Posted December 20, 2013 I've always wanted to see someone port or re-make the game for the PC with AI added (so a single player can play) and extra features, like random islands.
Oscar G. #19 Posted December 22, 2013 Utopia is a great game. Playing it with 2 players is a blast. My brother and I used to decided at the start if we were going to have a peaceful or a confrontational type of game. Suffice to say we never kept our word and in many instances we ended up fighting, in an out of the game. Love when those mercenaries popped up. I agree a one player upgrade with a smart AI would be fantastic. Cheers and best wishes!

I have the exact same memories, but with my Father (sorry, I didn't know your Mom back then). We always said we would play nicely as friendly neighboring states, but I eventually would send rebels to my Father's island and then deny it. It really brings back fond memories. -dZ.
Games For Your Intellivision #22 Posted December 22, 2013 Elektronite is an 'official' developer for the Intellivision platform. We have a letter to prove it. In my correspondence with Intellivision Productions, I asked about doing official sequels on the Intellivision, and Intellivision Productions said that ; "Unfortunately, another company has already licensed exclusive rights to do sequels and updates of the Intellivision library of games." I am guessing that this is the same company doing the 'Gen 2' releases. Of course, I only have interest in doing a sequel ON the original platform. I don't see this conflicting with 'Gen 2' releases. A Utopia sequel on the Intellivision can't be called 'Utopia 2', but that is no great loss. I have decided to do a similar IMPROVED game (I am reluctant to use the word 'sequel').....it is going to be called 'Banana Republic'. I previously asked Don Daglow if he was interested in doing a Utopia sequel and he gave a non-serious reply regarding getting up to speed on Intellivision programming. He didn't say 'yes' but he didn't say 'no'. The Boulder Dash ® programmer is going to do another game for us. However, it has not been determined WHAT the title will be. I am hoping to convince him to program 'Banana Republic'. I have some ideas, but I think that it would be useful to gather some ideas from fans in a design document that could be used as a guide to program the game. If you make suggestions, please remember that we are not doing a PC version. The Intellivision has limitations. However, with JLP cartridge, there is a lot more RAM and Flash RAM that can be used to make a really cool version.

I know we've had threads on this before but I'm certain an upgraded version of Utopia, with whatever name it has, would be a big seller and I'd be at the front of that line to buy. I hope the BD programmer is interested.
