I beat Ikari Warriors on one life

Recommended Posts

I've beaten it on one coin many times, but I've only beaten it on one life a few times, and this is the first time I've videotaped it. It is very difficult to do, especially the beginning and ending of the last stage. The last stage (the "pavement" area) and the body of water just before it are full of suicide bombers (this is the only classic game I know of that has suicide bombers), and they are the most dangerous enemies in the game. Not only do you have to avoid their bullets, but if they even get near you they will explode, taking you with them. If you watch the video you'll see some of the enemies near the end flash red; that's the indication that they are suicide bombers. There are a few of them earlier in the game, but starting at the last body of water leading to the final stage, practically all of them are suicide bombers (I killed most of them before they got close enough to me to flash red).

That's the first time I've seen anyone beat the game with dying, I remember that game being very hard. I never knew you could kill those weapons at the end with just long shots.

Can you also get to the end of Heavy Barrel without dying too?

The red bullets (as opposed to the default gray bullets) will destroy pretty much everything that the grenades are normally used for, except for tanks and helicopters. They don't have to be long shot to do so, but long shot of course makes it easier to keep your distance, which is especially nice with those weapons at the end that you mentioned.

As I said, I don't usually beat this game on one life, though I can usually beat it on one coin (which is the only way possible to beat it on my machine, because I have continues disabled in the dipswitches). So once you lose a life you lose your weapons upgrades, and there are no new weapons upgrades in the later parts of the game at all. So trying to get through the final pavement area after losing a life with your default weapons sucks, and those weapons at the end that you need to kill are very diffult with your default weapons, because you have to get close enough to them kill them with a wimpy gray grenade. You're likely to lose a few lives trying, unless you know the exact position on the screen to be in as you walk up close to them, so as to stay safely between their columns of shots coming at you.

I own a Heavy Barrel boardset which I can swap into my Ikari Warriors machine (it uses the same rotary joysticks as Ikari Warriors; I have a few other "rotary games" that I can swap into my Ikari Warrior cabinet too), but I have never played it much. My friend Corey, who is as good as or better than I am at Ikari Warriors (he has a long history with the game, going back to when we were kids and it was a fairly new game in 1987; he was addicted to it and I didn't care for it much at the time), loves Heavy Barrel too, and he beat it on one coin (not one life) the very day that I got the boardset in the mail. But no, I've never beaten it at all, much less on one life. I've only played it a handful of times. I like Ikari Warriors a lot better.
