NES, SNES, GBA, May Be Genesis Homebrew

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, My name is Eli and I run Piko Interactive.

Piko is a new project which concentrates in retro development only. We are currently working in a couple of new SNES games.

In addition, I've been able to acquire rights for unreleased/cancelled games to finally finish them and release them in cartridges.

I just wanted to make a post about our store, I launched the store with the target of encourage homebrew developers to make

new games for these retro platforms. As well as open the doors to anybody who wants to do cart releases and even publish the games

in digital platforms like XBLA, Android, and Wiiware.

So, If you are interested in new games, collect homebrew carts, check out the site, or send me an email if you just want to chat homebrew

The address of the site is http://pikointeractive.com

A parody of the original Donkey Kong? In what ways?

I think the website and owner are russian. The cart label says "Made In Russia" so I'm just assuming. It may just be a language thing and he doesn't literally mean "parody". Look up some youtube video on it. It's a pretty nice port.

Was this not also done on the Genesis? I thought there was a Donkey Kong port that looked pretty damn similar.

If it's the game I mentioned above, here's gameplay footage:

This game was released for free. The ROM can be downloaded at the previous link I posted.

-No, Im in Texas :), developer is from russia.

- I described as parody just in case Nintendo comes with their massive C&Ds, parody is under fair use according to us copyright law. And thats how nintendo won the case when they were sued by the creators of king kong.

-superGnes guys gave permission :)

Just don't be too sure of that.

First of all, that's not how Nintendo won the legal battle; that had nothing to do with a parody. Nintendo just found out that Universal themselves had stated King Kong was public domain in another case when it suited their needs. And with Universal having claimed that in court before, they couldn't say that they do own it later. The parody-thing was not used there.

Secondly... just saying it is a parody does not protect a work.

The Supreme Court of the United States stated that parody "is the use of some elements of a prior author's composition to create a new one that, at least in part, comments on that author's works".

If you were sued, you probably would not stand a chance by that definition. Classic Kong does not comment on Nintendo's Donkey Kong, it bears no satirical message about the original in any way. It is merely a clone, doing the absolute same thing with altered graphics, but still depicting what could be recognized as DK and more obviously, Mario.

I sincerely hope nothing will happen, as the game is a great version of DK. But you should be more careful when it comes to legal stuff. People tend to use stuff like "fair use", "parody" and "public domain" far to careless and without actually checking what that means. Misinformation spreads over internet forums and bad websites.

Question - are you manufacturing your own cart shells or are these re-purposed from old or dead snes carts? If the latter, are these in good shape, not yellowed, scratched up, etc?

These are newly manufactured

Boards are all new unless you want a PAL cart, then all would be done with donor.

We will, very likely, do a major release for genesis that I'm super excited about; give our take 6-8 months from now.

Anyone get a copy of Classic Kong yet? If so how does the label look and how well does it play on a real SNES?

Ok just ordered a cart only copy. I'll post a review of it when it arrives. $16 for shipping to Canada for a loose cart though. . . ouch.

Has anyone posted a review of the 4-in-1 cart yet? I'm thinking about picking up 4-in-1 along with Noah's Ark 3D and possibly that new homebrew space shooter, AstroHawk.

+1 for Classic Kong. It's awesome!

Also add the 4-in-1 homebrew, Noah's Ark 3D, and Astrohawk to that list as I recently ordered those as well. Can't vouch for whether they're good or not as I haven't played through them all yet. On a side note, Piko is selling three of the four games in the 4-in-1 homebrew as individual carts. Don't bother with those unless your region is PAL or you enjoy collecting everything (for some reason the 4-in-1 cart doesn't run on PAL hardware since the lockout code is embedded in the mapper chip).
