Intellivision and new TV question

Recommended Posts

I gave my brother a Intellivision 2 and a few carts to take home and play and it isn't working right the screen keep rolling up and down almost like the old vertical lines we used to get in TVs of old. My question is does anyone else have problems with the Intellivision and a LCD TV

Haven't hooked one up to my LCD that often, but never had trouble when I did. I just used the antenna (coax) input on the LCD (which still supports analog) and the ol' RCA F connector to coax. Seems to work fine.

Huh... You know I've never hooked up an Intellivision II, but I'd be shocked if it behaved any differently. It does have a change that allows video to come in through a pin on the cartridge port for the Atari adapter. Not sure that circuitry would cause this kind of problem, though. Someone w/ some good solid signal processing knowledge about this kind of thing will probably pipe up soon.

I had a different sort of issue. We discussed it on a separate thread. Basically, it's a problem with the RF signal strength, so you can boost it with an RF amplifier (which doesn't seem to work for some of us), or pass the signal through an old VCR, and connect to the modern TV using composite input. Worked like a charm! :)

I saw some talk about some kind of upgrade for Intellivision. I thought that might have been why?

I think you are referring to the so-called "video mod," right? If so, that's a completely separate kettle o' fish. That is to bypass the internal RF modulator of the console, and extract the video signal directly from the video chip. People have had mixed experience with this.

It works on many other consoles, where you get a cleaner picture. However, I believe there are certain differences in the Intellivision that makes it tricky; or that the signal is already quite clean to begin with, limiting its worth.

Don't quote me on that. I haven't done it, but I was like you looking into it some time ago. I haven't found a compelling case that convinces me it is worth it in any consistent manner. This is why I said people have had mixed experiences: it seems that a "ghosting" problem persists.

The VCR/composite video trick, on the other hand, worked swimmingly.
