Linux on Atari Jaguar?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there are any homebrew Linux distributions available for the Atari Jaguar or Jaguar CD ?

As the Jag doesn't have any CPU with process separation technology I'd guess not. This doesn't mean it's not possible, but it would be a bit flaky and arse IMHO, bit like running MultiTOS or MiNT on an Atari ST

mac os 7 doesnt need a mmu or many of the other things linux does ... I dont know off hand what the cpu is like in a jag, but even on a mac to run it you need a 68020 bare minimum and about a month to boot it

You're much more likely to get System 7 running on a Jag than Linux. Or even System 7 on a Genesis, for that matter.

http://www.linux-m68k.org/faq/reqs.html#OKCPUS:

You need a Motorola 680x0 processor with a programmable memory management unit (PMMU). There is no way to run Linux/m68k without one. This reduces the list of possible processors to 68020+68851, 68030, 68040, 68LC040, and 68060. This list of processors excludes the 68000, 68HC000, 68008, 68010, 68EC020, 68EC030, and 68EC040.

So, as LinkoVitch said above... nope.

What would be the point?

So you can have GNUEmacs and fire up Dunnet .... that is if someone writes a driver to use 2 Jag controllers numeric pads as a rudimentary keyboard .... priceless as well as pointless.

I've ported ucLinux to another 68K board, (I'm the guy who did the ucLinux firmware in the Honeywell/Ademco Internet Connection Module) for work, which is why I can say that...but I've got more than a few other things on my plate.
