How do you feed your classic gaming monster on the go?

Recommended Posts

back in the day i would bring my entire GB/GBC/GBA collection with me (carts in cases inside gallon-sized Ziploc bags), or on vacations i would usually bring the NES or GEN (eariest years); GCN or PS2 (later years).

now, i bring Nexus 7 + bluetooth impulse controller. i have VCS, NES, SNES, GEN, GB/GBC/GBA, TG16, Wonderswan, and MAME on it.

Yeah, there was a time my GB collection was small enough that I could bring the entire thing with me on every trip. After I surpassed 20 games and added a DS to the mix, I had to let go of that dream. Now I'm a pretty good judge of what games I'll be in the mood to play, what games I'll have TIME to play, and how much space I want to set aside. A typical "long weekend" trip would be two RPG or adventure games for marathon sessions, a puzzle or action game for killing time waiting at restaurants, and a wild card game... something new to the collection or simply picked at random. Also, I should mention that I tend to also carry the next episodes of whatever TV show I'm watching on an iPod. On top of that, I feel naked without a paperback book too. There's something to be said for low-tech solutions. It sounds like a lot, but it all fits into the smallest pouch on my backpack.

I've thought about getting some sort of emubox, or at least a flashcart. It's just not that big of a deal, honestly. If I have three or four games I know I'll enjoy, that's typically enough for me.

JB iPad mini and an 8-bitty gives me 2600, NES, SNES, Genesis/MD, Coleco, MSX1 and 2, PCE and C64. Enough retro games to keep me on the toilet for a thousand years.

Oh, and MAME of course.

When camping I found that Game Boy Pocket was cool in the daytime and all, but it was nice when I got the Game Gear because I could save that battery sucker for some night time gaming. I actually beat all of Bust-A-Move's 99 levels for the first time on a camping trip. "Fighting" Dregg was a surprise :)

A Wintel UltraBook. It currently gives me: ColecoVision, VCS, 400/800, 130XE, 5200, Intellivision, Vectrex, Astrocade, Apple 2 series, C64, VIC-20, TRS-80, PSX, Amiga, Odyssey^2, 8088 through Pentium via DosBox, SMS, Genesis, NES, SNES, TI-99/4A, Timex-Sinclair, TI-59, and nearly 175 arcade games/cabinets.

That is truly remarkable and bags the cat's ass nicely. I'm sure it could do even more, but that's what I'm currently set-up for at the moment.

I emulate on Android too. Got the full romset and 2600.emu ready to go on my tablet and my phone. For other systems I have collections of various sizes, mostly RPGs. At this point, it is rare that I don't have at least one Android/iOS game to play but 2600 games are a great way to pass the time when I'm bored and don't have anything new to play.
