DaytonaUSA #1 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) http://www.gaikokugamers.com/2014/01/gaikoku-gamers-has-sega-katana.html Ok, I'm literally flipping out here, fellow AAers! I just got a Sega Katana! Forgive me as I squeal in happiness, ... AHAHAH AUHHAUHAU HUA AIEIEIEIAIEIEIEIEIEI! Ok, I'm good.... Seriously though, the kit seems to be in great condition, although it doesn't seem to be getting anything but a black picture for the seller, which is great as I know exactly how to get rid of that issue (it's a matter of resetting the console with switches in certain positions). Although it is a risk, but for the price, I couldn't pass it up. It was worth it either way! It powers up, and his dip switch and slider switches were in the wrong position, so that kinda confirms my suspicions on how to get it to work. Anywho. Happy day! I'll post more pictures once it arrives at it's new home . Edited January 16, 2014 by DaytonaUSA
+Gemintronic #2 Posted January 16, 2014 Are you gonna be dev'ing on that? What will you use? Also, congrats! =)
DaytonaUSA #3 Posted January 16, 2014 Are you gonna be dev'ing on that? What will you use? Also, congrats! =) I know how to do basic operations on it, thanks to the articles I've read in the past at Assembler when I was dying for one a few years back. Developing? Honestly, don't think I have the time right now at least, although I'd love to try. Getting the hardware is the hardest part, so at least I'll have that . At the very least I'll see what playing a normal game on it looks. Maybe my copy of Propeller Arena, as that game was never released, would be a proper way to start . It'll honestly probably sit unplugged (no surge attack for me!) after I get video running, until I think of a proper way to use it And thanks!!
nanochess #4 Posted January 16, 2014 Congrats! I know the feeling of wanting something so badly
Rex Dart #5 Posted January 16, 2014 Beautiful system! I always loved the look of this kit.

DaytonaUSA #7 Posted January 16, 2014 Yeah, I'll be sure to post all I can once it comes in. As a huge 3D era Sega fan, this is honestly a dream come true .
Rhomaios #8 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) Finally going to give the Dreamcast a non-shmup, non-Turrican homebrew? (not that I'm complaining about the quality of DC shmups or anything) Edited January 16, 2014 by o.pwuaioc
DaytonaUSA #9 Posted January 16, 2014 Finally going to give the Dreamcast a non-shmup, non-Turrican homebrew? (not that I'm complaining about the quality of DC shmups or anything) Ha. If I did anything, it would be a racing game. So yeah, I wouldn't worry about a shooter or side scroller .
Rhomaios #10 Posted January 16, 2014 Ha. If I did anything, it would be a racing game. So yeah, I wouldn't worry about a shooter or side scroller . A new DC racer would be awesome too. It's a well-represented genre but always room for more!
DaytonaUSA #11 Posted January 17, 2014 A new DC racer would be awesome too. It's a well-represented genre but always room for more! Sega to me is all about racing games (Sega Rally, Daytona USA, etc) so that's what I'd want to do first. What I'm really curious about though is if there's a game already on the kit. That's how we got Toe Jam and Earl 3 recently, was a found Katana bought on eBay had the unreleased game on there (played like the original TJ&E games, not the Xbox game). So who knows what's on it. That's half the surprise! Hopefully, it wasn't owned by some crappy dev I could care less about
Rhomaios #12 Posted January 17, 2014 Hardly needs to be said, but save whatever you do find, even if it's not a racer. Lord knows we could really use a 2d platformer for it. I mean, unless the game really, really sucks. Then save us all. ;P
moycon #13 Posted January 17, 2014 Very cool item! It's always neat to get a new Dreamcast toy! Such a kick ass system. I remember when I was waiting on my Dreameye, boy was I excited. This is like the Dreameye x 1000!! Congrats! I'm hoping you find an almost finished copy of Shadow Man 2 or Omikron 2!! LOL
DaytonaUSA #14 Posted January 17, 2014 Thanks moycon! Yeah I remember the Dreameye. It was the square webcam they made, right? Remember seeing it back in the day in magazines. They worth a lot now? But yeah the wait is going to be so hard. Haha. I've wanted one of these for years. Can't believe I got this so cheap. Don't worry guys. Even if it's Barbies Farie Adventures With Barney, Pee Wee and Alf, I won't delete it. Actually that game sounds strangely awesome... But seriously let's cross our fingers it's someone no one has.
DaytonaUSA #15 Posted January 17, 2014 Oh, btw. Whatever it is, I will make it available to the public once I figure out how (with permission from the developer of course). It'll be free of course and available to all AA users.
TheGameCollector #16 Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) Even if it is something that already exists, you should still back it up. It could be a late beta and you wouldn't know from looking. Edited January 17, 2014 by TheGameCollector
DaytonaUSA #17 Posted January 17, 2014 Even if it is something that already exists, you should still back it up. It could be a late beta and you wouldn't know from looking. Yep exactly. Plus I mean, I wouldn't want to trash it as it came with the dev kit. It's special, even if it's out there, as it gives some history of where the kit came from and what it was used for. Honestly, I just hope something, anything is on it. What a thrill that would be, huh?
DaytonaUSA #18 Posted January 21, 2014 Katana came today! Pictures below. I can't seem to figure out how to get it to display on either a VGA monitor or basic TV. I've tried a number of different dip switch/rotary switch combinations. Any thoughts? Anyone know how to work this thing?

I've tried a number of different dip switch/rotary switch combinations. Any thoughts? Anyone know how to work this thing? photo 1.JPGphoto 2.JPGphoto 3.JPG No idea, except that those front switches are probably for testing arbitrary game inputs & nothing to do with actual operation of the machine. Could be wrong, though. Post a pic of the back of the machine, or wherever the video connections are?
DaytonaUSA #20 Posted January 21, 2014 The dip switches define how it's output. All down should be AV/Svideo. Rotary is region. 4 is US, 0 is Japan, etc. Not sure on the slider. Here's a pic of the back.
DaytonaUSA #21 Posted January 21, 2014 Ok, somoene on Assembler said it must then be stuck on "dev mode", and in order to get it out of that, I need to boot a program on a pc connected to it..... a pc I don't have lol. On to find an old crappy 90's pc.... yay.
Gamemoose #22 Posted January 23, 2014 Can't you possibly use a virtual machine for that? It'd be worth a try.
DaytonaUSA #23 Posted January 24, 2014 I would if the computer didn't need a SCSI port to talk to the katana. The mac doesn't have that.
+Curious Sofa #24 Posted January 24, 2014 Really hoping you can get this all working... And a part of me really really wants there to be a copy of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on there (I'd heard it was originally a DC game before it went PS2 then Xbox and GC). Or a sidescrolling Golden Axe port of TRODA, that's always been my dream. Course that could've been a Saturn game too maybe. I hadn't heard about this ToeJam and Earl 3 version, have to look into that! I liked the Xbox game but that sounds even sweeter being old school. As for a 90's PC, around here we have Goodwill Reboot stores, they probably get in old stuff like a 90's PC.
cybercylon #25 Posted January 25, 2014 I would if the computer didn't need a SCSI port to talk to the katana. The mac doesn't have that. Strange when SCSI ports were on just about on every Mac once. Didn't there used to be Firewire adapters for SCSI devices once upon a time. Funny thing is that you probably need to run some version of windows to talk to the thing. If there is no adapter that works, it might take an older Intel based Mac Pro with a SCSI card or it just might be easier to find an old PC. Have you dropped a line to the folks at dcemulation.org? I used to frequent that site, but haven't been active. There is a programming forum there I think.
