Old Skool - Intellivision Cartridge Release

Recommended Posts

Played my copy at around midnight last night and noticed a slight control issue too. Then again, had been drinking all night, so that might have had something to do with it.

Pretty neat game so far though! Will have to give it another try today.

It doesn't have the greatest control, but it works.....this game was modified from the original in the following ways:

1. Title screen and credits added

2. Graphics changed

3. Game save function

4. Second controller enabled. The hand controller routines were not changed.

1,201 points and level 3 on easy/slow setting was my best on 1st day. Hard to control chalk in a pinch at 1st and sometimes goes thru bad guy which can be annoying. Sometimes you get the benefit of the doubt as well but not as much as you get screwed with chalk. Overall, I think it's a fun little game with good replay value! Would love to know how many different floors there are? I only made it to 3rd floor and proceeded to quickly get my ass schooled:-)

I got my copy today as well. I did a gameplay video for it. I didn't do as well or get as far as some others did. But i like the game and will play more later. I wasn't sure how many levels or floors there were and didn't know much about the game period so i might say some misinformed information in the video. :dunce:

Cool and thanks, I was just curious. Cant wait to try it.

Just a souvenir. We had to print far more than needed. The cost of having decent stuff printed.

Good point William:-) That's what I'm gonna tell my nieces if they give me any crap or dare smack talk the inty. And thanks for correcting me on bully - I said bad guy but obviously bully makes much more sense in context of game. I like this game a lot and recommend that everyone give it s try and not just let it collect dust. Definitely worth playing and like I said previously, I believe it to have GOOD Replay Value if you are a fan of these types of games.

I haven't counted up the exact number, but it is definitely less than 140.....probably around 120.

The game will not be sold loose ever again.

I will be doing an overlay for the game on the next overlay run, and perhaps do a manual, but don't know if I will print it. I will make it available for downloading however.

I may sell ROM images of the game in the near future, but once I am established in Thailand.

I reserve the right to sell it CIB if there is continuing demand in the future. It probably won't be ever sold CIB though, so there is no reason to think "I should have waited for the CIB version".

People might wonder "Why did you do cart only?" Well, 100 or so copies doesn't 'deserve' a CIB treatment. One can't help but lose money on it. If there is someone who wants a box so much that they are willing to put their money where their mouth is, and buy 50 CIB copies, contact me.

I've wanted to do 'unlimited' releases, but unfortunately, no urgency to buy the games leads to people waiting for whatever reason. I can't wait around for people to decide they want to pick the game up. If you missed out on Old School, well, email me at [email protected] (I don't respond to PMs on Atari Age) and I will put you on the list to be notified if it ever comes out CIB. Don't hold your breath though.

There is one last chance to get the game. The Intellivision Podcast will be auctioning off the prototype copy (first copy) that had bad title music. It was fixed and then went to production.

BTW, underscoring William's point above: Economies of scale are an amazing, fickle thing. For my own upcoming release, I was quoted pretty much the same price for 1 cartridge label as I was for 2000 labels. This isn't an exaggeration.

Ok, it's also not 100% the case due to a technicality. Due to quirks in my label supplier's quoting system, their prices aren't monotonic. It's cheaper to buy 2000 labels than to buy 375, for example. The prices for all quantities are in a narrow band, though, over that entire range, as the cost is dominated by setup/NRE, not the material itself. But anything you buy and do not sell, you have to eat the cost for.

An inspecific example using round numbers: It might cost you $2000 for 100 units vs. $3000 for 200 units of something. On a per-unit basis, your price drops from $20/unit to $15/unit. But, if you only sell 110 units, your effective cost per unit went up to $27/unit and you're behind the curve. I picked round numbers that don't specifically correspond to any aspect of the process as an example. I've seen these sorts of economic tradeoffs present themselves again and again, though, whether it's boxes, labels, PCBs, overlays, cartridge shells... you name it.

Fortunately, Elektronite and LTO have worked well together to share the costs on common hardware (shells, PCBs, boxes, overlays) to limit these effects and still bring out very high quality releases. It's truly been a pleasure being a part, however minor, of all these releases.

And yes, I got a smile out of seeing my name in lights in the Old School credits. Thanks for the nod. :-)

Hi William - thanks for info. Hopefully in addition to future overlays, you will be able to print manuals as well when you do your next printing for next game - I know you will do a much better job than anything I can print and maybe it could be shipped with a future release for a few bucks. Thanks again for update.

Hi intvnut, thanks for sharing your insights on this subject matter. I'm a numbers guy so can appreciate what you and William are talking about and probably would be quite surprised at what some of these economies of scale are across various components. Hopefully one day we can get boxes for this one but understand may not happen.

Hmmm. Maybe we should talk.
