Is it normal when?

Recommended Posts

I have an Atari 2600 JR model, and I don't know if this is normal for the jr model. But when I put the power cord into the console sparks fly out the back of the Jr... I don't know if this is normal I just noticed it today XD

this is why I only connect that powersupl is the brick is NOT in the power outlet.

So first I put the jack in my atari and then I plug it into the power outlet, NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

I think it's fairly normal. It has happened to me even BEFORE plugging the brick into the wall. Little bit of static electricity perhaps?

A bit of a spark is normal. I suppose it happens because Atari used a two-segment 3.5mm jack plug for the AC adapter, and when you plug it in to the console, the segments briefly come into contact (and cause a spark) as they slide into the connector. Later systems used a barrel-style plug, which avoids this problem.

If you don't want to make sparks when you plug in your 2600, just plug the power cord into the console first.

WARNING: Do not use your console on top of a stack of oily rags!

or next to the lawn mower!

or in the laundry room if the pilot light has been out for a while on the water heater!
