Action! Run Time Disk & Action! Run Time Manual

Recommended Posts

Hello together!

After 30 years it seems, that the Action! Run Time Disk & the Action! Run Time Manual are lost.

Does anyone have the disk as an atr-image and the manual as a pdf-file?

The Atari community would really appreciate that! It is a little step for you, but a giant leap for the community.

Everlasting fame is optional available. :-)

Ah, I see.

The manual documents the runtime functions. Also joyfulcoder documents them here. AtariWiki has the source for the runtime here. Is that what's contained on Action! Run Time Disk the Action! Run Time Manual?

Either way, I can also understand wanting to preserve the originals for posterity.

I cannot locate my Action! runtime disk. Here's the only unaltered (at least I believe it's unaltered) ATR I could find in my backups. It was dated Jan 2005. I cannot be certain if I made the ATR or I acquired the ATR. That date is early enough that I might have used two PC DOS apps, Anadisk and De-Ana, to make an .XFD file. I would have then used Atari800Win Plus to convert the .XFD to an ATR.

I used this process for converting many of my single density disks to ATRs. If this was the case for this particular ATR then it might have bit errors as the process has no error detection whatsoever.

The file SYS.DOC on the ATR is the only documentation I have for the runtime.

As I believe this ATR is original then none of the patches mentioned in Action! Bugsheet errata #3 would have been applied to the files.

If I find my actual disk I'll make a new image so that we can be certain it's original and complete.

[EDIT]

I noticed AtariWiki also does not have PAD, Programmers Aid Disk so I'm enclosing an ATR of that as well.

runtime_action.atr

pad.atr

Dear a8isa1!

Have checked all the above. Can't say enough thank you to you! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

The runtime_action.atr is fine and indeed really(!) looks like it is the original one.

So, up to now just the manual is missing. Up to this solving, I have attached a text file from the SYS.DOC of the disk:

ACTION! runtime library package.txt

The Programmers Aid Disk I didn't know of! Again thank you! On this disk just one file: KALSCOPE.ACT is corrupted:

Could open from the damaged image the file and read as much as I could:

post-32599-0-03818800-1391040576_thumb.jpg

21 sectors, but the original one has 53 sectors:

post-32599-0-75175300-1391040627_thumb.jpg

Have attached what I could save:

PAD_KALSCOPE.atr

So, if anyone of the readers has the KALSCOPE.ACT file, please complete it here. :-)

The source code is here:

KALSCOPE.ACT.txt

It seems to be a Kaleidoscope program: KALSCOPE.DEM - a colorful demo of ACTION!'s speed.

This is an incredible thing after so many decades!

All the best and thank you so much! We will keep an eye on this side, if someday someone may post the manual here.

I have the Manual...So it is not totally lost.

I believe we are seeking a manual for the Action! Runtime and not the language reference manual, which is already available via the Internet Archive (see below). I'm pretty sure I've seen an indexed and cross referenced version even though I can't find it at the moment.

Yes a8isa1, you are right, we already have the:

ACTION Reference Manual.pdf

and (!) the:

The Action! Toolkit.pdf

as well, but we do not have the:

The Action! Runtime.pdf

Please see the cover in post #1, it must match with the content.

Thank all in advance, Mulder would say: the manual must be out there... ;-)

OSS ACTION! Programmers' Aid Disk 1.00

from above:

OSS ACTION! Programmers' Aid Disk
ATARI version 1.00
Welcome to the programmers' aid disk.
This disk contains routines written
in ACTION! which extend your ACTION!
programming capabilities. Following
is a list of the files on the disk,
together with a short description of
what is on each file.
NOTE: if you look at the directory,
you will notice that each ".ACT" file
is accompanied by a ".DOC" file of
the same name. The .DOC files are
documentation for the actual ACTION!
routines, and are written in a form
similar to that in the library section
of the ACTION! reference manual where
at all possible.
READ ME - this file
ALLOC ACT - some memory allocation
ALLOC DOC routines.
CIRCLE ACT - a circle drawing procedure
CIRCLE DOC
IO ACT - a group of extended disk
IO DOC file I/O routines.
MISC ACT - miscellaneous testing
MISC DOC and other routines.
PMG ACT - player/missile graphics
PMG DOC routines
PRINTF ACT - an extended version of
PRINTF DOC the library PrintF.
REAL ACT - routines which allow you
REAL DOC to use floating point
numbers in ACTION!
TURTLE ACT - implementation of turtle
TURTLE DOC graphics, ala LOGO.
GEM ACT - a four person game
GEM DOC written in ACTION!.
SNAILS ACT - a two person game
SNAILS DOC written in ACTION!.
KALSCOPEACT - a demo of ACTION!'s
speed. No documentation
on this one, so you're
on your own (Hint: press
the space bar while the
program is running).
There are also some files with the ex-
tension .DMn, where 'n' is either 1 or
2. These are demos of the routines
in a specific file, and either be read
into the ACTION! Editor and then com-
piled and run from the Monitor, or
they can be run directly from the Mo-
nitor.
NOTE: in most of the ACTION! source
files there are global variables and
procedures which contain the underline
character (_). These routines and
variables are internal to the routines
which are intended for your use, and
should not be either called or acces-
sed by you.

I ran across an original disk - do you still need an .atr?

Don't see the manual anywhere handy.

Bob

Yes rdea6, a long time ago, in a forum, far far away... ;-)

But if you have the original disk, please be so kind, if possible and share it with the rest of the world in form of an atr-image.

Many thanks in advance from all. :) :) :)

Dear bob1200xl!

Wow! That would be great! Especially, because a8isa1 told just of copy of the original one.

Yes, if you can make an atr of it, a 1000 thanks from the Atari community is for sure! ;-) ;-) ;-)

Well, the best for the manual is a copy shop, which directly converts it into a pdf file with ocr, so a copy and paste of the printed programs into the Atari is possible.

If you have PayPal we transfer all your costs plus a bonus.

Everlasting fame to you!

The very best regards! ;-) ;-) ;-)

Yeah Bob! That's it!!! :) :) :) :) :)

Perfect, all pages can be read in automatically! So 23 pages would be a matter of minutes! :-)

If read in, then the guy in the copy shop should ocr the file, else please send it to me or here, it will look afterwards like this here:

http://atariwiki.de/wiki/attach/Atari%20Calculator/Atari_Calculator_Manual_Optimized.pdf

I have created with the author.

Tera-thanks in advance. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Dear Ripdubski!

Thanks for your reply. Your 1st link: I have contacted him about: no result!

Your 2nd link: I am the author for Atari Wiki for that. But we would like ti have a copy of the original one for all mankind. ;-)

Same is here:

http://atariwiki.de/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=AtariCX85

It was 2013, when finally the original source code could be published.

Only possible with such good people like here. ;-) ;-) ;-)
