These can actually still be found new (NOS) mainly from arcade machine part suppliers.

 

I got 8, actually pulled them off an old ISA graphics card - another possible source although probably real scarce by now.

You can do a preliminary test on 600XL by just plugging them in. You'll still only see 16K though.

 

Once the upgrade is done, you can't go back to using only the 16K Ram chips though - the system would see mirror images repeated 4 times and try to startup as if 48K was available.

 

Be sure to follow the proper procedure - pretty sure there's one around that had an error. The 8-bit computer forum has various threads about the upgrade and links and the text document.

 

IIRC, I just did it based on a text doc instructional, not a hard upgrade at all.
