fadix
The question is in the title. Are PCF 554 drives compatible with 8-bit Atari systems? What I've read so far points to the drive being only compatible with the PC line, but I can't find a definitive answer.
Mathy
Hello fadix I googled "Atari PCF554" and found, among other things, this picture: I guess that means it not compatible. Remember, the PCF554 is a PC drive which connects to a PC. The XF551 is a PC drive which connects to an Atari 8 bit computer. The latter needs hardware to translate signals from the drive to the computer and vice versa, the first doesn't. Sincerely Mathy
BillC
I don't have any knowledge about the PCF554 drive, but it's likely that in addition to the different interface board that it also uses a 720KB drive mechanism.
+Larry
No. This was supposedly almost compatible with the ST (68000 cpu) line. You had to do a minor mod to use them. Might pose this question in the ST forum and you might get more info. Notice the round-type drive connectors (yes, hard to see, but not nearly wide enough to be SIO connectors). -Larry
Mathy
Hello guys After finding out that "atari PCF 554" gives different results then "atari PCF554", I found the page with the pictures again: Sincerely Mathy PS http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=8758
Fletch
I believe this was made for the Atari PC-1. An MS-DOS clone made by Atari. Looked like the Mega ST. http://www.tietokonemuseo.net/tietokoneita/atari-pc1/ Edited February 3, 2014 by Fletch
charliecron
Pretty sure you could use standard external ST floppy drives on the PC-1 as well...
fadix
Thank you everyone who responded. Definitely not compatible with 8-bit Ataris.
